Raising Indigenous Success in Education (RISE) Grant

The Office of Indian Education is excited to annouce a new grant opportunity that seeks to support educational needs and opportunities in Arizona districts and schools that serve a significant number of Native American students and staff, consistent with the purposes of the Office of Indian Education legislation A.R.S. 15-244. This grant will provide supplemental resources and key supports aimed at prioritizing authentic stakeholder and community engagement, strategic partnerships, and initiatives that promote academically excellent and culturally relevant educational opportunities.

RISE Grant Details

The end goal of this funding is twofold: 

1) Students and staff benefit from programs and opportunities that focus on academic preparation for college, career, and community leadership, for identity development, and for holistic well-being; and, 

2) Funded projects act as “bright spots” for future investment by the ADE Office of Indian Education to expand and/or replicate successful programs based on community needs and desires in Indigenous Education.  

  • School districts in Arizona consisting of public and/or charter schools serving Native American students and educators. Also, consortiums consisting of tribally-controlled and/or grant schools serving Native American students and educators.
  • All applicants must justify the number of project sites and how the designation of OIE RISE project sites will impact a significant number of Native American students and staff. Only one application is permitted per District/Consortium.

For fiscal year 2024, the ADE Office of Indian Education intends to award a minimum of eight multi-year grants in the amounts not to exceed $225,000 per grant. Applicants shall propose a project period of three years. Use the table below to understand how the previously mentioned amount will be funded:

Year 275% with a maximum amount of $75,000 (25% grantee matching funds)
Year 350% with a maximum amount of $50,000 (50% grantee matching funds)

 

NOTE:

  • Year 1 of the OIE RISE Grant is competitive and Years 2-3 are continuing based on applicant maintaining substantial compliance and program eligibility requirements outlined in the Continuing Application. Continued funding for this initiative is dependent upon annual legislative appropriations and program performance. 
  • Grantees must complete a budget for each site within the funding application. Funds may be utilized for costs related to personnel. professional development, student support services, curriculum and resource material and development, community engagement, transportation, lodging, stipends, and other program-related costs. Funds made available under this grant shall be used to supplement, not supplant, any other federal, state, or local education funds.

  • Proposed programs under this grant will inspire and empower local systems to dramatically improve and transform education and life outcomes for Native American students. The intent of this program is for innovation and flexibility combined with technical assistance to meet community priorities for education and respond to the changing educational landscape and identified needs of Native American students in Arizona.
  • Funded programs will participate in a three-year process that includes community engagement, professional development, and technical assistance, with the end goal to build on community strengths and meet community needs for Indigenous Education as follows:
    • YEAR 1: Stakeholders and community engagement, plan development
    • YEAR 2: Implementation plan
    • YEAR 3: Continued plan implementation while building sustainable practices and programs

*a district/consortium grantee is expected to provide matching funds in Years 2 and 3
