Emergency Shelters

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a federally funded meal program through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that provides reimbursements for nutritious meals and snacks served to children 18 and younger and persons with disabilities who are emergency shelter residents.

Emergency shelters that participate in CACFP provide residential and food services to children experiencing homelessness. To be eligible, the shelter must be a nonprofit institution or a temporary residential site, housed by a nonprofit agency.

Celebrating Our School Lunch Heroes!

Governor Doug Ducey and the Superintendent of Public Instruction are honoring school nutrition specialists and school lunch workers across the state for their hard work to keep Arizona’s children fed all year-round, especially during school closures. To honor the important work of these frontline employees, Governor Ducey proclaimed today “School Lunch Hero Day” across Arizona.

Summer Meal Service

The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) Seamless Summer Option (SSO) provide kids and teens in low-income areas free snacks and/or meals when school is out.  

There are several ways that schools and local organizations can be a part of providing summer meals.

Afterschool Care Snack Program and At-Risk Afterschool Meals

Afterschool Care Snack Program (ASCSP)

The Afterschool Care Snack Program (ASCSP) is a component of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) that is federally assisted through the United States Department of Agriculture operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. The purpose of this program is to provide care in afterschool settings. It provides one, nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free snacks to each enrolled child after the school day.

Free and Reduced-Price Percentage Report

The latest Free and Reduced-Price Percentage Report is posted in the accordion below. Beginning SY 21-22, the report will contain a narrative that outlines the use of school meal data (including annual determinations and Special Provision Options), as well as an explanation of the free and reduced-price calculation.

Getting Started with CACFP

Child and Adult Care Centers, Emergency Shelters, Head Starts, and At-Risk sponsors who wish to participate in the CACFP in Arizona must complete a series of trainings and submit applications to ADE for assessment of the organization's financial viability, administrative capability, and accountability for Federal funds.
