Afterschool Care Snack Program and At-Risk Afterschool Meals
Afterschool Care Snack Program (ASCSP)
The Afterschool Care Snack Program (ASCSP) is a component of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) that is federally assisted through the United States Department of Agriculture operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. The purpose of this program is to provide care in afterschool settings. It provides one, nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free snacks to each enrolled child after the school day.
At-Risk Afterschool Meals
The At-Risk Afterschool Meals (At-Risk) is a component of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) that is federally assisted through the United States Department of Agriculture operating in Afterschool Programs. The purpose of the programs providing meals and/or snacks must be to provide organized, structured, and supervised care in afterschool settings. It provides free afterschool snack and supper in low-income areas to all children who are 18 years of age and younger. Each child can be provided with one snack and one supper after the regular school day. On non-school days (i.e. breaks during the regular school year or weekends), operators may provide up to one snack (AM, PM or, evening) and up to one meal (breakfast, lunch, or supper) to each child per day.
School Food Authorities
If your School Food Authority would like to participate in the ASCSP, please contact your Health and Nutrition Services Specialist. You will make a revision to your existing CNPWeb site application. There is no additional application forms or training required.
If your School Food Authority would like to participate in At-Risk snacks and/or meals, please contact your Health and Nutrition Services Specialist. You will make a revision to your existing CNPWeb site application and submit the SFA At-Risk Afterschool Meals Principals Addendum. There is no additional training required.
Afterschool Care Snack Program
At-Risk Afterschool Meals is a component of the CACFP. Due to streamlining efforts from USDA, SFAs have the option to elect either the CACFP meal pattern or the NSLP meal pattern for At-Risk meal services.

ASCSP and At-Risk are reviewed during the NSLP Administrative Review (AR). If the sites selected for the AR participate in ASCSP and/or At-Risk, then those programs will be reviewed at those sites.

Community Organizations and Child Care Centers
Non-profit Community Organizations and Child Care Centers may participate in the At-Risk Afterschool Meals component of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). The Getting Started with CACFP webpage outlines complete application instructions to operate the CACFP in Arizona.
The Arizona Department of Education conducts Administrative Reviews (ARs) of all sponsoring organizations operating the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) at least once during each three-year review cycle. The objectives of the AR are to:
- Determine whether program requirements are met
- Provide technical assistance
- Secure any needed corrective action
- Assess fiscal action and, when applicable, recover improperly paid funds.
