Teach Camp is a year-long support system designed for beginning special educators. The goal of Teach Camp is to increase retention of our newest special education teachers by giving them the tools they need to survive and thrive during their first years in the classroom.
Teach Camp includes face-to-face and virtual professional learning on topics like IEPs, getting organized, and self-care. We want special education teachers to leave Teach Camp feeling energized, positive, and connected to the Arizona Department of Education/Exceptional Student Services, the national and local Council for Exceptional Children, their own special education directors, and to each other.
New special education teachers who attended the first year of Teach Camp cannot stop raving about their Teach Camp experience!
“The vibe, the energy of the whole experience was great! Learning the legality behind special education was extremely important, especially being in the first years in education.”
“I feel that all the information was useful and appreciated. I loved the way that it was structured. I used the information to help me have a great year. Thank you!! I'll miss seeing you all!”
“The abundance of information from ADE was amazing. It made me feel that I am not alone.”
“The pacing was great. The breakout sessions were informative, and it was nice to be able to break up the day. It was awesome to meet and brainstorm with other teachers in similar situations. I enjoyed the speakers and their messages.”

Teach Camp will launch virtually this summer and is designed for special education teachers who will begin their first, second, or third year of teaching special education in the fall of 2021. Due to the unforeseen circumstances in the summer of 2020, we are including third-year teachers in this year’s camp. Recent graduates from traditional teacher preparation programs, alternative certified teachers, and veteran general education teachers transitioning to special education are all welcome.
The cost of participation in Teach Camp is $150 and includes a three-day virtual summer “camp” from July 7–9, 2021, a one-hour virtual session in the fall and in the spring, and a one-day, in-person session in May 2022. Each camper will receive a copy of The Survival Guide for New Special Education Teachers, a one-year membership to the Council for Exceptional Children, and additional valuable resources.
Teachers may not self-register for Teach Camp. Special education directors or administrators must register their special education teachers for Teach Camp. The deadline for registration is Friday, June 18.
