COURSE INTRODUCTION

Who is a Military-Connected Student?

  • A military-connected student is not defined by a single experience. They may be:
  • A child of an Active Duty service member
  • A child of the National Guard or Reserves
  • A child in a dual-military family
  • A child of a recently transitioned or honorably discharged veteran
  • A child of a wounded, ill, or injured service member
  • A child of a fallen service member

Military-Connected Students Today

  • There are approximately 1.6 million military-connected children in the United States
  • About 1.3 million attend public schools nationwide
  • The majority attend local school districts rather than DoDEA schools
  • Military-connected students move three times more often than their civilian peers, attending 6–9 schools during K–12 academic years

Understanding Their Experience

While many military-connected students share common experiences, their individual journeys may vary widely. As each student carries a unique story shaped by service, sacrifice, resilience—and often, change.

Common experiences may include:

  • Frequent school transitions and curriculum disruptions
  • Separation from a parent due to training or deployment
  • Reintegration challenges after deployment
  • Adjusting to new communities and peer groups
  • Living with uncertainty and change

These experiences can impact:

  • Academic continuity
  • Social connections
  • Emotional well-being [rand.org]
  • At the same time, military-connected students often demonstrate:
  • Resilience and adaptability
  • Cultural awareness
  • Independence and problem-solving skills

At the same time, military-connected students often demonstrate:

  • Resilience and adaptability
  • Cultural awareness
  • Independence and problem-solving skills

Purpose of This Course

This course is designed to:

  • Build awareness of military culture and the military child experience
  • Deepen understanding of academic and social needs
  • Provide strategies to support transitions and continuity
  • Strengthen your school’s readiness for the Purple Star School designation

Highly Mobile Students & the Purple Star Connection

A highly mobile student is defined as a student who experiences frequent school changes for reasons beyond their control, such as:

  • Military relocation
  • Foster care placement changes
  • Homelessness or housing instability
  • Migrant family movement

These students often face challenges similar to military-connected students, including:

  • Interrupted learning and credit gaps
  • Difficulty forming lasting relationships
  • Increased stress and adjustment periods

How Purple Star Schools Support Highly Mobile Students:

The Purple Star School framework is intentionally designed to support all highly mobile students by promoting:

  • ✅ Consistent onboarding and transition practices
  • ✅ Dedicated Points of Contact for student and family support
  • ✅ Peer support programs and student ambassadors
  • ✅ Staff training on mobility-related challenges
  • ✅ Clear communication systems for incoming and outgoing students

Military-connected and highly mobile students are not just passing through our schools—they are valued members of our community.

When schools implement Purple Star practices, they create systems that ensure every transitioning student—regardless of circumstance—feels seen, supported, and set up for success.

Special Note: Modules 1 to 4 assessments are now available through Google Forms.  Upon successful completion of all modules, the AZPSS POC Training Certificate will be emailed.
