Recruitment: 

  • This brief outlines short-term strategies that, when paired with long-term comprehensive strategies, can be employed to hire, prepare, and support teachers in schools and districts facing special education teacher shortage crises.

Retention: 

  • The National Coalition on Personnel Shortages in Special Education and Related Services (NCPSSERS) is a national coalition composed of more than 30 participating member organizations. Since 2006, NCPSSERS has been dedicated to addressing the issue of shortages in special education and related services personnel in schools.

  • IRIS Center: Teacher Retention: Reducing the Attrition of Special Educators. A revision of Addressing the Revolving Door: How to Retain Your Special Education Teachers, this module highlights the key elements for school administrators who seek to support special educators and increase teacher retention (est. completion time: 1 hour).​​​​​

Developing a Grow Your Own Toolkit- Arizona Department of Education

Center on Great Teachers and Leaders: Educator Shortages in Special Education: Toolkit for Developing Local Strategies. The Educator Shortages in Special Education Toolkit is organized around the guiding principle that short-term strategies to meet immediate demand must be intentionally paired.

 

Stories from the Classroom: Five Tips for Longevity as a Special Educator: In this video from the PROGRESS Center, a 20-year veteran special educator shares five tips for longevity in the field of special education including the importance of being clear, concise, and consistent, using documented data, being one step ahead of technology, remembering your personal and professional why, and remembering to laugh and embrace change.
