The Jimmy Awards 6/27

What's New in the Arts?

The Jimmy Awards® is pleased to announce this year’s 92 nominees, coming from 46 high school musical theatre awards competitions across the U.S. The show will feature dynamic ensemble and solo performances and will culminate with the presentation of a Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor award, as well as other honors and scholarships. Winners will be chosen by a panel of industry experts. Click here for the full list of the 2022 nominees. 

The 2022 Jimmy Awards will take place in-person for the first time in three years on Monday, June 27 at 7:30pm EDT at the Minskoff Theatre, 200 West 45th Street in Manhattan. Nominees will prepare for the show during a seven-day professional training intensive located at The Juilliard School.

 

Fans can watch our two ASU Gammage High School Musical Theatre Award winners, Tre Moore and Haley Raffaele, debut on a Broadway stage live on YouTube and Facebook with links available soon at www.JimmyAwards.com.

As the school year draws to a close, we applaud all Arizona Arts educators and students for completing another artful and creative year, despite ongoing pandemic challenges. This year we saw a return to live performances, a record 978 students earned a Seal of Arts Proficiency, exemplar student art and performances to celebrate Arizona Youth Arts Month, and Arizona student ornaments displayed at the White House. Arizona arts education is alive and vibrant thanks to your support of the arts and your ongoing commitment to supporting a well-rounded education for every student to achieve their potential.

In this edition of the Arts Education Newsletter, we celebrate Oscar Manuel Landa Samano who will be representing Arizona in the National Finals for the Poetry Out Loud competition, introduce the new Title IV-A Arts Education Specialist, JulieAnne Weissberg, and celebrate the 2022 Arts Seal Recipients. Several perform and awards opportunities will be shared as well.

Participation and achievement grew again for the third year in a row, with 978 students earning a Seal of Arts Proficiency! Congratulations to the students, teachers, and LEAs for their ongoing dedication and commitment to the arts. In this newsletter, we will also share several opportunities to showcase the amazing work of Arizona student artists.

AZ Student in 2022 Poetry Out Loud Finals

Nine high school students from across the nation are vying for the title of 2022 Poetry Out Loud™ National Champion and the $20,000 prize as part of an annual poetry recitation competition from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Poetry Foundation. The 2022 competition will culminate on Sunday, June 5, 2022, with a one-time-only webcast available on the NEA’s website at Arts.gov/Poetry-Out-Loud beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. CT / 4:00 p.m. PT. Poet, publisher, and New York Times bestselling author Kwame Alexander will host the virtual event that will include poetry recitations by each of the finalists and the announcement of the National Champion.

2021-2022 State Seal of Arts Proficiency Achievement Report

In the 2021-2022 school year, participation in the State Seal of Arts Proficiency grew 132%! 41 LEAs administered Seals and 35 LEAs awarded Seals to graduates. School participation grew 178% with 146 schools participating. Most impressive was the 147% increase in student achievement! In the 2021-2022 school year, 978 students earned a State Seal of Arts Proficiency, 27 students achieved a Seal in two artistic discipline, and 1001 total Arts Seals awarded!

West Valley Arts Opportunity

West Valley Arts Council is actively recruiting students (ages 15-18 years old) attending high school in Goodyear (and within the West Valley) who are interested in the arts as a career for our Gallery 37 arts education program. Started in 2001 and typically a summer youth public arts education program, we are expanding the Gallery 37 program by providing students an apprenticeship during the summer of 2022 (May-June).

 

Students will be working with a professional artist to design, develop, and install a permanent piece of public art for the City of Goodyear.

  • The Goodyear project will start end of May 2022
  • Deadline to apply is April 29th
  • FREE to apply.
  • Students receive FREE college credits in partnership with Estrella Mountain Community College
  • Students receive a cash stipend for their work
  • Students will have the unique opportunity to develop vital career skills

HERBIE HANCOCK INSTITUTE IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION PRESENT NATIONAL PEER-TO-PEER JAZZ INFORMANCE • APRIL 19, 2022

The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education, will present a livestream Jazz Informance on Tuesday, April 19 at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.  Hosted by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona and 14-time GRAMMY Award-winning jazz legend Herbie Hancock, the event – a combination of performance with educational information – will feature five of the local area’s most gifted high school music students, internationally acclaimed jazz trumpet recording artist Sean Jones, and renowned jazz educator Dr. J. B. Dyas.  The event will focus not only on what jazz is and why it is so important to America but also on the American values that jazz represents: teamwork, unity with ethnic diversity, the correlation of hard work and goal accomplishment, perseverance, democracy, and listening to one another.

Justice - Arizona Theatre Company
