Teaching Reading Effectively: Enrichment for Teachers of English Learners | Fall Cohort
COURSE FORMAT: This series will consist of five three-hour sessions. Each synchronous session will require full participation in both the whole group and small group (break-out) sessions. Participants will engage in learning opportunities that allow for reading, writing, listening, and speaking as a way to support various modalities of communication.
TARGET AUDIENCE: K-3 Educators who serve English Learners
Session 1: Language Development and Supporting ELs in the Classroom
This session covers foundations in the Language Development Approach and understanding the specific needs of English Learners.
Session 2: Developing Oral Language while Learning to Read
Session 3: Teaching Foundational Reading Skills to English Learners
Session 4: Fluency and Vocabulary
Session 5: Comprehension and Writing
* Sessions 2 – 5 will review key concepts related to the science of teaching reading while making connections to the four principles of Arizona’s Language Development Approach: asset-based behaviors and expectations; integrated instruction in disciplinary language and content; targeted and explicit language instruction; and assessment, monitoring, and feedback.
Educators will acquire research-based methods for teaching reading to English learners and have the opportunity to practice and apply their learning.
