Calling all arts educators to highlight innovative ways performing arts, visual arts & interdisciplinary classrooms are engaging every student, every day, with every opportunity at the 2023 ESSA Conference January 25-27. The Virtual Student Showcase is an exciting opportunity for students, teachers, and schools to share the amazing and incredible arts learning experiences that are occuring within Arizona classrooms.
Student submissions due December 10th by 11:59pm. Selected participants notified December 15th by 5pm.
Arizona Opera's Education Teaching Artist, Dr. Miriam Schildkret, PN1, is ready to join your class in-person or virtually to provide a masterclass on the topic of your choice!
Masterclass topics include: vocal technique, opera history, career development, performance anxiety, mental/physical health relating to performers, and individual or group coaching for classical singers, and musical theatre. Available for ALL cities in Arizona (in-person only available in the Phoenix metro area).
Grade Level: Recommended 6th - 12th grade
Time: Classes can be scheduled 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Masterclasses are 45 - 60 minutes in length

Arts Integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Through Arts integration, students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving objectives in both. (Kennedy Center)
STEAM uses science, technology engineering, the arts, and math as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. (Institute for Arts Integration and STEAM)
Arts programs can help schools achieve the goals of Title I by facilitating student engagement and learning, strengthening parent involvement, and improving school climate and schoolwide behavior. This site provides resources for school leaders who wish to embrace arts programming among their strategies for achieving Title I goals. It is intended, in prticular, for schools with schoolwide Title I programs, and includes tools for planning, implementing, and evaluating arts-based strategies in alignment with state and federal Title I regulatiaons.
Fundamentals of the Arts Integration & STEAM Approach
Arts Integration and STEAM are approaches to learning. They are not curriculum, nor are these a set of strategies. Instead, these are research-based shifts which embed both the art and the science of teaching and learning. Within these approaches are four cornerstones which are key to building, using and sustaining any arts integration or STEAM effort.
The Molly Blank Fund Teaching Artists Program (TAP) is designed to create teaching artists in the metro Phoenix area that have been trained in the Kennedy Center arts integration method. After training, these teaching artists will develop residency lesson plans that will be implemented in a classroom setting.
The Arts – Dance, Music, Theatre, Visual, and Media Arts – are essential components of a complete and well-rounded education. Through the Arts, we share and celebrate humanity’s highest achievements and develop enduring historical and cultural understandings of ourselves and the world around us. Instruction in the Arts builds discipline, enhances self-esteem, inspires creativity, fosters linguistic, numeric, and aesthetic literacy, and encourages students to make and reach personal and academic goals. The Arts seamlessly integrate with other disciplines and subject areas to create engaging and rigorous learning opportunities for all students.

The mission of the Arizona Department of Education Office of Arts Education is to provide support to Arts educators, classroom teachers, school and district administrators, and Arts stakeholders – including Arts and education organizations, community groups, and service organizations – so that every student has the opportunity to experience the power and beauty of the Arts, and the joy, creativity, and intellectual stimulation that instruction in the Arts provides.
A balanced, comprehensive, and sequential program of study in the Arts allows Arizona’s students to learn and practice 21st-century skills and behaviors that foster critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creative problem-solving. Preparing students with the skills to thrive in the 21st century and to pursue a future in the creative industries, if they choose, is the goal of a high-quality arts education. Arizona was one of a few key states to participate in the development of the 2014 National Core Arts Standards. In 2015, the Arizona Arts Standards were updated to mirror them more closely. These standards are rooted in the philosophy of process over product, and they center on the importance of cultivating artistic literacy for all students. They are sequential and include five recognized artistic disciplines: Music, Dance, Media Arts, Theatre, and Visual Arts.
Regardless of artistic medium or discipline, the Arizona Arts Standards emphasize and are organized around the creative process, and as such, all standards-based arts courses should be organized around the Four Artistic Processes:

The Arizona State Seal of Arts Proficiency is a testament to a rich history of excellent arts education in the state. This diploma seal is administered by the Arizona Department of Education’s Office of Arts Education and is awarded to graduates who complete the minimum arts pathway requirements throughout their high school career. The Arts Education Data Dashboard includes K-12 enrollment data that has been self-reported by district and charter schools across the state. Information included in the dashboard may be used to compare district- and school-level arts education programs with the State Board's Arizona Arts Education Requirements, evaluate the effectiveness of arts education programs and answer questions frequently asked by Arizona parents regarding arts education programs. In addition, users may explore discipline-specific access and enrollment information, as well as participation in the Arizona's State Seal of Arts Proficiency program.
