RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION INFO: Teacher Attrition Survey Opens November 1, 2022

Program Area: Special Education
Special Education Directors,ESS collects data each year through the Teacher Attrition Survey to make informed decisions about recruitment and retention efforts in Arizona. Participation in the survey is mandatory for all public education agencies in Arizona.For the past few years, the survey has opened in February and closed in May of each fiscal year. This school year, the Teacher Attrition Survey will open on November 1, 2022, and close on January 31, 2023.

SPED DATA INFO: Indicator 8 Parent Involvement Survey Opens January 18

Dear Special Education Directors,All school districts and charter schools are required to annually administer the State Performance Plan Indicator 8 Parent Involvement Survey to parents of students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The survey will open January 18 via ADEConnect ESS Data Surveys. For more information, visit the survey web page.

DISPUTE RESOLUTION INFO: Facilitated IEP Training and Request Updates!

Both state and national trends point to an increase in the frequency and intensity of special education disputes. More than ever, all members of the IEP team would benefit from exploring additional tools and strategies for strengthening collaborative decision-making and building consensus. The ADE/ESS Dispute Resolution unit is pleased to offer a variety of professional learning opportunities, free of charge, to public education agencies (PEAs) seeking to establish or strengthen a facilitated IEP culture.

MONITORING INFO: Programmatic Monitoring Alert for Preschool Transition

Please see the Programmatic Monitoring Alert regarding necessary changes to programmatic monitoring of the preschool transition process, developed in response to findings issued by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and the resulting corrective action assigned to ADE/ESS. These updates are directly related to the transition of children from Early Intervention (Part C) to School Age (Part B).

DATA MANAGEMENT ALERT: FY26 Statement of Assurances Open for Submission

Program Area: Special Education
The FY26 Statement of Assurances application is open for submission. All public education agencies (PEAs) must submit the IDEA Statement of Assurances (SOA) through the ESS Portal within ADEConnect. This is required before any FY26 activities in the Exceptional Student Services portal are allowable. The portal will block any PEA that has not completed the SOA effective July 1, 2025, which is when FY26 begins. 

DATA MANAGEMENT ALERT: New AzEDS Portal Report: SPED50 – SPED Concurrency Report

Program Area: Special Education
The ESS Data Management team is pleased to announce that a new report is now available in the AzEDS Portal, SPED50 – SPED Concurrency Report. This report will help PEAs find concurrent SPED data in AzEDS along with the concurrent PEA, Site, and dates reported to aid in determining the accurate reporting for the student. This report will only show Primary SPED LRE data reported by your PEA that overlaps with Primary SPED LRE data reported by another PEA (Concurrency).

Special Education Directors, - the registration link below has been updated.The ADE/ESS is pleased to announce that registration for the 2022 Special Education New Director Symposium (SENDS) is now open! The purpose of this professional learning opportunity is to prepare new special education administrators for the practical operation of a special education system. Topics covered in SENDS include compliance and legal requirements, fiscal issues, assessment, general supervision, and ADE supports and resources.

ADE/ESS is excited to share that Arizona’s 2022 IDEA Conference will be held in person from September 7–9, 2022 at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge in Phoenix.This year’s theme is Rise Up: Reimagining and Transforming Educational Practices. This cross-stakeholder event includes special education administrative staff, youth and young adults with disabilities, family members and caregivers, state agency staff, educators, service providers, and community members who share a commitment to student success.

The goal of Teach Camp is to increase retention of special educators by providing our newest special education teachers with the tools they need to survive and thrive during their first years in the classroom.
