Federal and State Requirements to Ensure Educational Success for Students in Foster Care* 

This professional learning session provides local education agency (LEA) Foster Care Points of Contact and other LEA personnel with an overview of federal and state requirements to ensure the educational stability and success of students in foster care. This session will cover information on key requirements such as: 

  • Responsibilities of Arizona LEA Foster Care Points of Contact 
  • LEA collaboration with child welfare agencies 
  • School stability through the best interest determination (BID) process 
  • School of origin transportation 
  • Immediate enrollment and records transfer 
  • Funding services for students in foster care 
  • Accurate data collection and reporting

Educational Stability for Students in Foster Care Through the Best Interest Determination (BID)

This professional learning session provides local education agency (LEA) Foster Care Points of Contact and other LEA personnel with an in-depth analysis of the best interest determination (BID) process. This session will cover information on elements of the BID process such as: 

  • Required and optional participants for BID processes 
  • Procedural steps and required timelines for BID and immediate enrollment processes 
  • Collaboration with child welfare agencies 
  • Factors to consider for educational success  
  • Transportation provision during and after the BID process

    Transportation for Students in Foster Care 

    This professional learning session provides local education agency (LEA) Foster Care Points of Contact and other LEA personnel with an in-depth analysis of requirements to provide transportation to the school of origin for students in foster care. This session will cover information about transportation for students in foster care such as: 

    • Roles and responsibilities of LEAs and child welfare agencies 
    • Elements of effective LEA transportation procedures 
    • Funding transportation for students in foster care
