The following Special Paper Version (SPV) test formats are available to meet the needs of students who cannot access the test content through computer-based testing: braille, large print paper, and regular print paper.

For AASA and AzSCI, all student responses from SPV tests must be key-entered in TestNav by the end of the applicable test window. Computer-Based Testing (CBT) schools will follow the CBT window, and Paper-Based Testing (PBT) schools will follow the PBT window.

For ACT Aspire, student responses from braille or large print tests/answer documents must be transferred to a standard print answer document for scoring. All ACT Aspire SPV tests must be administered during the ACT Aspire PBT test window, which is shorter than the CBT test window.

Braille: The student’s IEP or 504 Plan must document the need for braille materials for instruction and assessment. A Braille Test Kit will include directions for administering the braille assessment.

Large Print Paper: The student's IEP or 504 Plan must document the need for large print materials for instruction and assessment.

  • The large print test is an enlarged version of the regular print paper test. The amount of text and images per page is the same as the regular print paper test but in a larger font size.
  • The font size for the large print test booklets will be 18 pt. on paper sized 14" x 18".
  • Unless a student regularly has reading and math instructional materials enlarged, the student may benefit from using the Zoom feature in the online test instead.  The Zoom feature can be tried out in the sample tests.

Regular Print Paper: A student who cannot access the computer for classroom work due to injury, medical condition, or visual impairment may need a paper test in lieu of taking the test with peers on the computer. The student’s IEP or 504 Plan must clearly indicate how the teachers accommodate the student's needs in class and the restrictions the student has when using technology. Examples include no more than xx minutes of screen time per day, or must have a significant break after xx minutes, no computer usage at all, etc.

  • This request form is for use by schools and districts/charters. Parents may submit a request to their school or district/charter, then the request may be submitted to ADE by the school, district, or charter.

Test Information
If the student is in Grades 3-8 and needs a braille AASA test, let us know if they will need contracted braille or uncontracted braille for the AASA Reading test units. Contracted braille uses contractions for common words and letter combinations. Uncontracted braille is a letter for letter transcription of print. Please note the student will take the contracted braille format of the AASA Writing and Math test units.
All ACT Aspire Special Paper Version tests must be administered during the shorter paper-based testing window. Braille and large print test responses must be transcribed to a standard print scorable answer document by a qualified Test Administrator by the end of the paper-based testing window.
Let us know if the student requires a regular print paper test for ACT. Please note that ACT does not consider a regular print paper test administered with standard time to be an accommodation. Therefore, a student who requires an ACT regular print paper test but does not require any other ACT accommodations, such as extended testing time, must test on one of the Paper (Standard) test dates: March 23 or April 6, 2027.
Let us know if the student requires a large print paper test for ACT. A large print ACT test requires approval from ACT during ACT's published accommodations request window and will require the student's test delivery format to be confirmed as "Paper" in ACT's PearsonAccess Next platform.
Documentation

You must submit pages of the student's current IEP or 504 plan that indicate the need for an SPV form of the test. The document you submit must include:

  • The date of the document and the student's first and last name and SSID.
  • The Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP).
  • The Instructional Accommodations section of the document that includes accommodations used routinely during instruction throughout the year in lieu of computer instruction. The instructional accommodations must align with the assessment accommodations.
  • The Assessment Accommodations section of the document that lists the student's testing accommodations for district and state assessments.
  • For large print test requests, the IEP or 504 plan should indicate the minimum font size required for the student to access paper materials.
