The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) is dedicated to helping fight obesity and the diseases associated with obesity. In addition, the department is committed to providing adequate nutrition for proper growth and development of the body and the mind. Children with adequate nutrition are able to focus better on learning, have improved behaviors and test scores, and fewer absences. As a result, the ADE has developed the Arizona Nutrition Standards to assist schools, parents, and communities in providing a model of healthy living that decreases the risk of obesity and allows our children to excel in school.
The Department of Education has developed the Arizona Nutrition Standards, required by ARS 15-242. The law mandates that all kindergarten through eight grade schools who participate in the National School Lunch Program implement the Arizona Nutrition Standards.
The foundation for the Arizona Nutrition Standards is based on the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the United States Department of Agriculture’s Federal Child Nutrition Program regulations.
