On October 23, 2017, the Arizona State Board of Education (SBE) adopted new rules in the area of special education (see linked documents below). Among other things, these new rules replaced the specific professionals previously required to verify certain disabilities with the general term “qualified professional.” The State Board of Education then directed the Department of Education to develop a list of qualified professionals eligible to conduct the appropriate evaluations, subject to review and approval of the SBE. ADE/ESS stakeholder input was solicited from 11/20/17-11/27/17, a period that was necessarily short because the list needed to be put before the State Board of Education for review and approval at the December SBE 2017 meeting. Stakeholder feedback was carefully reviewed and used to further refine the Qualified Professionals List.
On December 4, 2017, the Arizona State Board of Education preliminarily passed the attached Qualified Professionals List and requested an additional period of stakeholder input before the list is put forward for final approval at the January 2018 SBE meeting. The public is invited to provide input on the “Preliminary” Qualified Professionals List until Monday, January 8, 2018 by emailing [email protected]. All comments will be reviewed and considered prior to the SBE meeting being held on January 29, 2018.
Note: the 12/4/17 “Preliminary” Qualified Professionals List is the current guidance regarding the specific professionals required to verify certain disabilities until another version is approved by the SBE.
