2015 Great Arizona Teach-In Job Fair

The flyer and letter from Superintendent Diane M. Douglas were recently sent to Human Resource Directors at districts and charter schools. They contain information about our Tenth Annual Great Arizona Teach-In Job Fair that will be taking place on April 25, 2015. The Teach-In is the largest education job fair in Arizona, with an average of 800 candidates attending each year. The Arizona Department of Education/Exceptional Student Services strongly recruits special education and related services candidates from both in-state and out-of-state universities to attend the Teach-In. If you will be in need of special education personnel, we recommend that you encourage your district/charter to attend. Registration information can be found at www.teachinaz.com.

The Arizona Department of Education, Exceptional Student Services (ADE/ESS), is preparing a grant that will help local education agencies (LEAs) to grow their own special education teachers. The grant is still in the developmental stages, but we hope it will be available toward the end of March. An Arizona school district or non-profit charter school with a current or anticipated special education need may apply for an eligible paraprofessional who has the desire, motivation, and commitment to complete college coursework requirements that will lead to a bachelor’s degree in special education or early childhood special education and to acquire a special education certificate within six months after completing the teacher preparation program.

Accurate NCLB Data in SAIS

Special Education Administrators,

Accurate Data in the SAIS System = Dollars

Student level enrollment and program data reported by the school districts and charter schools (LEAsis critically important to funding and program determinations for all education programs. The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) uses this data to determine eligibility and calculate funding of limited federal dollars such as IDEA, Title I, Title II, and English Language Learner Programs. Incomplete, inaccurate, or late reporting will result in a potential loss of federal funds.

memo was sent to Superintendents, Charter Holders, Principals, SAIS Coordinators, and Federal Program Coordinators outlining the process to review the accuracy of your LEA’s data and reconcile through Common Logon. Please contact your SAIS data administrator to ensure the accuracy of your LEA’s data in SAIS. The deadline for updating your 2014 NCLB Indicator data is Monday, March 2, 2015 at 5:00 p.m.

Special Education Rule Committee 1/15/15 Communique

The Special Education Rule Committee’s purpose is to examine Arizona Special Education State Board 401 rules, to propose rules that are clear, instructive, and aligned to the IDEA, and to provide guidance for implementation. Please read the January 15, 2015, Rule Making Communique for more information about the Committee, the Core Team membership, and the January 15 meeting. Also attached is a draft of the State Board Rules governing special education showing current, proposed, and guidance for review and comment.



Future Ready Summits Announced by the Department of Education: Phoenix Summit—April 13–14

Future Ready, a new initiative announced by President Barack Obama in November 2014, is an effort to help school district leaders improve teaching and student learning with technology. The initiative, a joint project of the Dept. of Ed. and the Alliance for Excellent Education and a coalition of others, provides districts with free resources and support to ensure that local technology and digital learning plans align with instructional best practices. To learn more about the initiative, see the website www.FutureReadySchools.org.

At the center of this initiative is a series of regional events in which district teams will develop action plans and metrics to measure progress in using digital tools to improve teaching and student outcomes. The summits are open to district leadership teams on a first-come basis from districts in which the superintendent has signed the Future Ready District Pledge. Already, more than 1,300 district superintendents nationwide have taken the pledge. A summit is scheduled for April 13–14 in Phoenix, so if you’re interested, talk to your superintendent about signing the pledge



Next Meeting of Special Education Advisory Panel (SEAP)

The purpose of SEAP is to provide policy guidance with respect to special education and related services for children with disabilities in Arizona. The next meeting is January 20, 2015, 9:30 am–3:30 pm, at the Arizona Department of Education/Central Office, 3300 North Central Avenue, 16th Floor, Room 104, Phoenix, AZ.
