Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to designing flexible curriculum, instruction, and materials that are accessible to all students. The training will introduce the principles of UDL and present information on a framework to reduce barriers and maximize learning opportunities for all students.

Presenter Jeff McCormick, MS, is the Program Director for the Universal Design for Learning Center at OCALI in Columbus, Ohio.  Jeff presents at schools, universities, and state and national conferences on topics ranging from universal design for learning, technology integration, and educational project deployment at state levels. He has created on-line training modules for UDL that will be available throughout the year to institute participants at no additional cost.UDL March



Understanding the Post School Outcomes (PSO) Survey: Data Collection, Analysis and Use

This interactive and practical training is designed for those who oversee or administer the Post School Outcomes (PSO) Survey. The PSO Survey, conducted one year after students exit high school, is required to be completed by districts and charter schools who serve students with disabilities ages 16 and over each year between June 1st and September 30th. Upon completion of the training participants will:
understand requirements for the PSO Survey
be skilled in conducting the survey and inputting responses
know how to incorporate suggested tips and techniques to insure that data collection is meaningful and results obtained are useful.

TBI 303 — Contemporary Issues after Brain Injury Executive Functioning and Transition for Success in Adulthood

This 2-part workshop will include two 3-hour presentations from agency professionals who will focus on (1) Assessing Executive Functioning and Implications for College and Career Readiness and (2) Secondary Transition: From School to Adult Services in Vocational Rehabilitation, Adult Programs, and Post-Secondary Education. The format for the sessions will be short-format lecture with open discussion, ongoing question and answer sessions throughout, and include interactive opportunities to review relevant assessments and resources. All materials for this training will be provided.

You must have taken TBI 101 prior to this workshop.

Writing a Secondary IEP for Transition Using Best Practices Workshop

This interactive workshop assists participants in applying information from previous secondary transition training(s) conducted by our ADE/ESS transition specialists to specific students’ needs. The expectation is that participants attending this training will come with a foundation of Indicator 13 knowledge. After a quick review of Indicator 13 components (with specific best practices examples), specialists will assist participants in reviewing their IEPs to answer four key questions designed to improve transition plans.

De-escalate: Stop the Power Struggle

In this full-day session, participants will learn prevention and de-escalation techniques, as well as the importance of understanding their own emotional states in avoiding power struggles. Participants will have the opportunity to connect and apply these techniques through case studies, role play activities, and real-life discussions and examples and will learn how to make connections to their own emotional reactions and how these reactions relate to their students’ responses. This session is for any school staff members who want to be proficient at de-escalating and avoiding power struggles with students.

Workshops and Webinars for Census Reconciliation and Detour to Solutions

In a continuation of the special education child count training series offered by ESS Data Management, we are pleased to present webinars and workshops geared towards the second phase of the annual special education census process, reconciliation, as well as the opportunity for participants to advance their knowledge on how to resolve SAIS integrity failures related to special education participation data. Please see the attached flyer for details; registration is required for each session. Note that the Detour to Solutions session requires a working knowledge of special education data in SAIS. In the spring, ESS Data Management will close out the training series with webinar sessions that focus on the final phase of the annual special education census process, non-reconciliation.
