SOS for Annual Special Education Data Collection – Workshops and Webinars

All public education agencies (PEAs) that have served special education students during the 2013-14 school year are required to submit Annual Special Education (SPED) Data information to the Arizona Department of Education (ADE).

If your PEA has NO student data that qualifies for inclusion in the Annual SPED Data Collection online application, please alert ADE/Exceptional Student Services (ESS) Data Management in writing.

The Annual SPED Data Collection consists of the following sections: Exit, Discipline, Personnel, Teacher Attrition Rate Survey, Preschool Transition, and Parentally Placed Private School Students.

Training for this mandatory data collection will be offered via webinars and regional workshops

Novice Users

The novice session will be of greatest benefit to PEA personnel who are new to submitting Annual SPED Data Collection information. This webinar will be divided in two parts; you will need to register for each webinar separately.

Advanced Users

The Advanced session will detail specific changes from the previous year’s data collection for those already familiar with this data collection process.

Preschool Transition

This webinar is for PEAs that serve preschool age children and that are required to complete the Preschool Transition Report within the Annual SPED Data Collection online application.

Secure Care

This webinar is reserved for personnel from secure care schools, i.e., the Arizona Department of Corrections, the Arizona
Department of Juvenile Corrections, county juvenile detention centers, county jail facilities, or county accommodation districts that serve detained / incarcerated youth with disabilities.

Approved Private Schools

This webinar is for reserved for personnel from approved private schools who are required to complete the Personnel Report within the Annual SPED Data Collection online application.

Regional Workshops

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The target audience for the regional workshops is the novice user. However, these workshops are also open to advanced users who wish to receive a “refresher” on this data collection. All data requirements will be covered.

AT Boot Camp: Assistive Technology Round-Up

Aiming to have the best assistive technology services in the West? These intensive one-day trainings will help you round up the resources and skills you need! Providing quality assistive technology services is one way to make sure all of your students can access Arizona’s Common Core Standards. Registration for each of the one-day trainings is $60.00 and includes your grub (a boxed lunch). Trainings will be held in Phoenix at the Arizona Department of Education’s new location at 3300 N. AAC for Students with Complex Communication Needs

This one-day workshop will focus on the use of assistive technology, including AAC devices, mobile devices, and apps to improve students’ communication and access to the curriculum based on the Common Core Standards. Participants will identify the components of communicative competence, including linguistic, social, and strategic skills, and use a rubric to select and implement appropriate strategies and technologies. Participants will review both apps designed for speech-language therapy/assistive technology and generic apps that can be creatively applied to intervention with a wide range of communication goals.

All special education census data is due in SAIS by 5:00 p.m. The final SPED07 report will be based on the data in SAIS as of 5:00 p.m. on this date.

May 9, 2014

PEAs whose final counts do not reconcile will be notified and asked to complete the non-reconciliation portion of the census process by close of business on May 9, 2014.

Meeting Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards for Special Education

Training Outcomes:

During this two-day workshop, participants will:

  • Become more familiar with Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards (AZCCRS), including shifts required in ELA and Math
  • Identify the components of an AZCCRS-aligned IEP
  • Be prepared to develop and write AZCCRS IEP goals and benchmarks aligned to the student’s PLAAFP
  • Become familiar with readily available resources, tools, and evidenced-based strategies to support students with disabilities to access the ACCRS

Day One

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify pedagogical shifts in ELA and Mathematics in Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards
  • Describe the importance of access to AZCCRS for students with disabilities
  • Define the role of the special education specialist in implementing AZCCRS for students with disabilities
  • Define Universal Design for Learning and state how UDL supports students with disabilities
  • Identify areas of need and recommend appropriate standards for sample students

Day Two

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe a process for developing and writing AZCCRS IEP goals and benchmarks aligned to the student’s PLAAFP
  • Describe how to identify entry points to standards
  • Generate standards-based goals for sample students with IEPs
  • Identify readily available resources, instructional strategies, and evidenced-based strategies to support students with disabilities
  • Develop an action plan to build capacity within your school/district

A laptop or iPad will be needed on day two.

TBI 303 – Contemporary Issues after Brain Injury Executive Functioning and Common Core, Youth Depression, & Transition

This 3-part workshop will include three, 2-hour presentations from agency professionals who will focus on (1) Assessing Executive Functioning and Implications for the Common Core, (2) TBI-Youth Depression, Grief and Suicide Prevention, and (3) Secondary Transition: From School to Adult Services in Vocational Rehabilitation and Adult Programs. The format for the sessions will be short-format lecture with open discussion, ongoing question and answer sessions throughout, and include interactive opportunities to review relevant assessments and resources. All materials for this training will be provided.
