Public Notice Regarding Application for Federal Funds under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA)

The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) is applying for federal funding under IDEA ‘04 for the period of July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016.  The eligibility document serves as the basis for the operation and administration of activities to carry out the requirements of Part B of the IDEA.  In accordance with 34 C.F.R. §§ 300.165 and 441 (b)(7), the federal regulations that implement the General Education Provisions Act (GEPA) ((20 U.S.C. §1232d(b)(7)(B)), this application is posted for public participation and comment.

The Application document sets forth policies and procedures that Arizona will undertake:

  • to ensure that all eligible children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education that includes special education and related services to meet their unique needs;
  • to ensure that the rights of children with disabilities and their parents are protected;
  • to assist public education agencies in providing for the education of all children with disabilities; and
  • to assess and ensure the effectiveness of efforts to educate those children.

Who Should Attend: The Arizona Department of Education/Exceptional Student Services is offering a variety of workshop-trainings for AzCIS intermediate or advanced users in middle school or high school.
***These workshops are not designed for beginning users.

TBI 303 — Contemporary Issues after Brain Injury Executive Functioning and Transition for Success in Adulthood

This 2-part workshop will include two, 3-hour presentations from agency professionals who will focus on (1) Assessing Executive Functioning and Implications for College and Career Readiness and (2) Secondary Transition: From Kickball to College: Voc Rehab, Adult Programs, and Post-Secondary Education. The format for the sessions will be short-format lecture with open discussion, ongoing Q&A sessions throughout, and include interactive opportunities to review relevant assessments and resources. All materials will be provided.

You must have taken TBI 100 (mTBI/Concussion) OR TBI 101 (Introduction to TBI) prior to this workshop.

Writing a Secondary IEP for Transition Using Best Practices Workshop

This interactive workshop assists participants in applying information from previous secondary transition training(s) conducted by our ADE/ESS transition specialists to specific students’ needs. The expectation is that participants attending this training will come with a foundation of Indicator 13 knowledge. After a quick review of Indicator 13 components (with specific best practices examples), specialists will assist participants in reviewing their IEPs to answer four key questions designed to improve transition plans.

Understanding the PSO Survey: Data Collection, Analysis, and Use

This interactive and practical training is designed for those who oversee or administer the Post School Outcomes (PSO) Survey. The PSO Survey, conducted one year after students exit high school, is required to be completed by districts and charter schools who serve students with disabilities ages 16 and over each year between June 1st and September 30th. Upon completion of the training participants will understand requirements for the PSO Survey and how to incorporate suggested tips and techniques to insure that data collection is meaningful and results obtained are useful.

Braille Code Changes Meeting: Collaborating to Meet the Educational Needs of Arizona’s Teachers and Students

We are excited to announce an interagency collaboration to develop an effective pathway for introducing the changes from English Braille American Edition (EBAE) to Unified English Braille (UEB). The approaching changes to the Braille Code require that those it impacts and those responsible for addressing those changes gather to plan for its implementation. We want to work as a community and to support the implementation of UEB and are inviting stakeholders to participate in an initial meeting on January 12, 2015 from 9:00-4:00 that will be held at the Arizona Department of Education Building, Room 312, 1535 W. Jefferson, Phoenix, AZ. A second, follow up meeting has been scheduled for February 9th, 2015 at the Flinn Foundation on 1802 N Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ if necessary to finalize recommendations made, and invite additional participants. To help us to strategically plan for the needs identified by the group, we have invited a meeting facilitator to help us collaborate effectively.

Some of the questions to be addressed at this meeting are:

  • What is the initiative that is bringing about these changes?
  • Who will these changes impact?
  • What actions need to be taken as a result of decisions made?
  • What additional stakeholders need to be included?

Lunch will not be provided, however time will be allotted to order in, or to go to nearby restaurants.

Meeting Arizona College and Career Ready Standards (AZCCRS) for Special Educators

Throughout the two-day workshop participants will have the opportunity to engage in whole group, small group, and paired collaborative discussions within grade level and content areas to refine collaborative practices between general education and special education and develop and write AZCCRS standards-based Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.

Training Outcomes:
During this two-day workshop, participants will:

  • Expand understanding of the AZCCRS for ELA/Literacy and Mathematics in order to develop standards-aligned IEP goals aligned to the student’s AZCCRS present levels of academic achievement and functional performance (PLAAFP)
  • Integrate research of how children learn to order to identify areas of need in the development of IEP goals
  • Obtain a solid understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to integrate learning into daily practice
  • Develop and write standards-aligned IEP goals related to students’ needs as described in the PLAAFP
  • Discuss and explore how to use and differentiate assessments based on students’ IEPs to inform instruction
  • Explore and use readily available resources, tools, and evidenced-based strategies to support students with disabilities to access the AZCCRS in ELA/Literacy and Mathematics
