TBI 100 — Concussion and Mild Brain Injury and Returning to Learning

This new ½-day (3.5 hour) course introduces participants, especially general educators, special educators, coaches, trainers and parents, to the concept of mild brain injury (mTBI). Content will address types of mild brain injuries and causes as well as the implications of injury on normal brain-behaviors. In addition, the workshop will focus participants on how to successfully return students to the learning environment after concussion. The format will include short lecture segments with open discussion and a 20-minute video segment addressing the need for concussion/mild brain injury prevention.

2016 IDEA – STMP-CCRTT Year 1 Grant-Funded Training Alert

Special Projects is identifying teams to participate in the grant-funded Secondary Transition Mentoring Project/College and Career Readiness Team Training (STMP–CCRTT). As a result of intensive face-to-face trainings, specially selected district or school teams of educators will develop skills and take part in activities in multi-tiered instruction and interventions, effective collaboration between stakeholders, and data-based decision making and action planning at the student, classroom, and school levels. This training will prepare local education agencies (LEAs) to provide all students with the competencies they need to plan for careers, to engage both socially and emotionally, and to equip themselves as lifelong learners.

Teams selected to participate in the training will receive instructions for submitting the online funding application at a later date.

2016 IDEA – SETTA (Special Education Teacher Tuition Assistance) Grant

The Arizona Department of Education, Exceptional Student Services (ADE/ESS), has released a grant that will help local education agencies (LEAs) to grow their own special education teachers. An Arizona school district or non-profit charter school with a current or anticipated special education need may apply for an eligible paraprofessional who has the desire, motivation, and commitment to complete college coursework requirements that will lead to a bachelor’s degree in special education or early childhood special education and to acquire a special education certificate within six months after completing the teacher preparation program.

2016 IDEA – Az-Tech

To lay the foundation for capacity building and systemic change in their schools, teams of educators known as Az-Tech grant teams will participate in grant-funded training workshops in the fundamentals of assistive technology (AT) and universal design for learning (UDL). National and state leaders in the field of AT will conduct 11 days of outcome-driven training events during the training year (September 2015–May 2016) with support provided by the Arizona Department of Education, Exceptional Student Services (ADE/ESS), Special Projects Az-Tech AT team. At the end of the year, the team will be better equipped to consider and implement AT tools and strategies to support students with disabilities and contribute to the training of other education professionals in its local education agency (LEA).  This grant is appropriate if your agency serves students with a wide range of disabilities.

Although this is a non-competitive grant-funded training, the program is limited to a maximum of 15 teams. Special Projects will select five grant applications for eligible LEAs from each of the three regions of the state (northern, central, and southern) on a first-come, first-served basis in order of their submission through the new Grants Management Enterprise (GME). Applications that miss the 15-team cut-off will be put on a waiting list in the order of submission. Teams on the waiting list may be given the opportunity to participate if a selected team must surrender its place in the program prior to the first training day.

The funding application will be available soon in the Grants Management Enterprise (GME).

Meeting Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards (AZCCRS) for Special Educators

Team up a special education teacher or leader with a general education teacher or leader and get 50% off one registration!

Throughout the two-day workshop participants will have the opportunity to engage in whole group, small group, and paired collaborative discussions within grade level and content areas to refine collaborative practices between general education and special education and develop and write AZCCRS standards-based Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.

Training Outcomes:
During this two-day workshop, participants will:
• Expand understanding of the AZCCRS for ELA/Literacy and Mathematics in order to develop standards-aligned IEP goals aligned to the student’s AZCCRS present levels of academic achievement and functional performance (PLAAFP)
• Integrate research of how children learn to order to identify areas of need in the development of IEP goals
• Obtain a solid understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to integrate learning into daily practice
• Develop and write standards-aligned IEP goals related to students’ needs as described in the PLAAFP
• Discuss and explore how to use and differentiate assessments based on students’ IEPs to inform instruction
• Explore and use readily available resources, tools, and evidenced-based strategies to support students with disabilities to access the AZCCRS in ELA/Literacy and Mathematics

Please bring laptop or iPad to the training if possible.

Universal Design for Learning Institute

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to designing flexible curriculum, instruction, and materials that are accessible to all students. The training will introduce the principles of UDL and present information on a framework to reduce barriers and maximize learning opportunities for all students.

Presenter Jeff McCormick, MS, is the Program Director for the Universal Design for Learning Center at OCALI in Columbus, Ohio.  Jeff presents at schools, universities, and state and national conferences on topics ranging from universal design for learning, technology integration, and educational project deployment at state levels. He has created on-line training modules for UDL that will be available throughout the year to institute participants at no additional cost.UDL March

Understanding the Post School Outcomes (PSO) Survey: Data Collection, Analysis and Use

This interactive and practical training is designed for those who oversee or administer the Post School Outcomes (PSO) Survey. The PSO Survey, conducted one year after students exit high school, is required to be completed by districts and charter schools who serve students with disabilities ages 16 and over each year between June 1st and September 30th. Upon completion of the training participants will:
understand requirements for the PSO Survey
be skilled in conducting the survey and inputting responses
know how to incorporate suggested tips and techniques to insure that data collection is meaningful and results obtained are useful.

(EDISA is part of the new Examining Practices process that has replaced the Exceptional Student Services (ESS) six-year monitoring cycle.). The five-member school teams will develop their own school-based, dynamic, sustainable action plans outlining the application of evidence-based practices to be implemented during FY 2017. An additional grant will be available for the schools that have approved plans to assist in the implementation of these plans.

2016 IDEA – EDISA 1

Grants will be available for Arizona school districts and non-profit charter schools  that have been identified by Program Support and Monitoring (PS&M) for team training in examining data to improve student achievement (EDISA) during FY 2016. (EDISA is part of the new Examining Practices process that has replaced the Exceptional Student Services (ESS) six-year monitoring cycle.) These local education agencies (LEAs) will receive training at a central location where several teams will gather or at the district or charter school site, whichever is assigned by PS&M staff). This invitation-only grant will support five staff members from each identified LEA to participate in the team-training program. Each team will develop a dynamic, sustainable action plan outlining the application of evidence-based practices to be implemented during FY 2017. An additional grant will be available to those LEAs that have an approved plan to assist in its implementation.
