The Iceberg of Communication

Using two Alaskan icebergs as a metaphor for two people trying to communicate, the presenter will describe how miscommunication is imbedded inescapably in every interaction between any two people. Defining the “hidden” factors “below the waterline,” he will entertain participants with anecdotes about how predictably any two persons engaged in conversation will misunderstand each other and offer suggestions on how to deal with these inevitable miscommunications.

Transition Services and the IDEA: What Are School Districts’ Responsibilities for Postsecondary Education?

Parents of students with disabilities are increasingly demanding more from public school districts in preparing their teenagers for life after high school.  These demands can include postsecondary tuition payments, career development courses, and other expensive postsecondary training. In this session, the attorney presenter will provide a comprehensive review of the legal requirements for planning and providing transition services to students with disabilities, the most recent and important judicial case law on these issues, and her expert tips for navigating these thorny legal issues. Multi–Tier Behavior Supports Training for K–12

Sponsored by the Arizona Department of Education/Exceptional Student Services, Multi-Tier Behavior Supports is a three-year training that will assist school teams with the development of a school-wide approach for positive behavior management practices. This training is based on School-Wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (SW-PBIS) evidence-based elements.

Facilitated IEP Trainings

The Arizona Department of Education/Dispute Resolution Unit is excited to present the first Facilitated IEP training of 2015.

The Dispute Resolution Unit believes there are three components needed to facilitate a successful IEP meeting: standardized meeting practices, knowledge of the IEP process, and the use of meeting management skills that aid in minimizing conflict and maximizing collaboration. This training is designed to teach these three components.

There is a limit of 50 participants; registration is $75.00 for the two-day training and will include breakfast, lunch, and all training materials.

TBI 100 — Concussion and Mild Brain Injury and Returning to Learning

This new ½-day (3.5 hour) course introduces participants, especially general educators, special educators, coaches, trainers and parents, to the concept of mild brain injury (mTBI). Content will address types of mild brain injuries and causes as well as the implications of injury on normal brain-behaviors. In addition, the workshop will focus participants on how to successfully return students to the learning environment after concussion. The format will include short lecture segments with open discussion and a 20-minute video segment addressing the need for concussion/mild brain injury prevention.

2016 IDEA – STMP-CCRTT Year 1 Grant-Funded Training Alert

Special Projects is identifying teams to participate in the grant-funded Secondary Transition Mentoring Project/College and Career Readiness Team Training (STMP–CCRTT). As a result of intensive face-to-face trainings, specially selected district or school teams of educators will develop skills and take part in activities in multi-tiered instruction and interventions, effective collaboration between stakeholders, and data-based decision making and action planning at the student, classroom, and school levels. This training will prepare local education agencies (LEAs) to provide all students with the competencies they need to plan for careers, to engage both socially and emotionally, and to equip themselves as lifelong learners.

Teams selected to participate in the training will receive instructions for submitting the online funding application at a later date.

2016 IDEA – Az-Tech

To lay the foundation for capacity building and systemic change in their schools, teams of educators known as Az-Tech grant teams will participate in grant-funded training workshops in the fundamentals of assistive technology (AT) and universal design for learning (UDL). National and state leaders in the field of AT will conduct 11 days of outcome-driven training events during the training year (September 2015–May 2016) with support provided by the Arizona Department of Education, Exceptional Student Services (ADE/ESS), Special Projects Az-Tech AT team. At the end of the year, the team will be better equipped to consider and implement AT tools and strategies to support students with disabilities and contribute to the training of other education professionals in its local education agency (LEA).  This grant is appropriate if your agency serves students with a wide range of disabilities.

Although this is a non-competitive grant-funded training, the program is limited to a maximum of 15 teams. Special Projects will select five grant applications for eligible LEAs from each of the three regions of the state (northern, central, and southern) on a first-come, first-served basis in order of their submission through the new Grants Management Enterprise (GME). Applications that miss the 15-team cut-off will be put on a waiting list in the order of submission. Teams on the waiting list may be given the opportunity to participate if a selected team must surrender its place in the program prior to the first training day.

The funding application will be available soon in the Grants Management Enterprise (GME).



Understanding the Post School Outcomes (PSO) Survey: Data Collection, Analysis and Use

This interactive and practical training is designed for those who oversee or administer the Post School Outcomes (PSO) Survey. The PSO Survey, conducted one year after students exit high school, is required to be completed by districts and charter schools who serve students with disabilities ages 16 and over each year between June 1st and September 30th. Upon completion of the training participants will:
understand requirements for the PSO Survey
be skilled in conducting the survey and inputting responses
know how to incorporate suggested tips and techniques to insure that data collection is meaningful and results obtained are useful.
