The Office of English Language Acquisition Services (OELAS) will review the English Language Proficiency Standards Review (ELPS) and update them to align to the English Language Arts Standards. Community input on the current ELP Standards is appreciated and will be considered during the review process.
The Arizona Department of Education is fully committed to continuous review of our academic standards. Under the leadership of Superintendent of Public Instruction, Diane Douglas, we are entering a new era of standards creation and revision. Rather than the typical seven year wait, we intend to constantly monitor all academic standards so that implementation concerns, whether they be related to standards, curriculum, or instruction, can be handled in a more immediate fashion. The form below represents an opportunity for Arizonans to provide on-going input and feedback. Please complete the form in its entirety.

The English Language Proficiency Standards will be reviewed and updated this year, and we are looking for interested participants to serve on the revision committee. The committee will meet monthly from October through May to complete this work. Those interested are invited to complete the application and submit it to [email protected] prior to October 6, 2017.

The 2017 OELAS Conference, Opening Doors through Language, will be held from December 6-8, 2017 in Tucson, Arizona.

The OELAS Conference is sponsored by the Office of English Language Acquisition Services unit of the Arizona Department of Education. This conference will provide meaningful professional development opportunities for educators of ELs, designed to help meet the unique challenges faced in the Structured English Immersion or mainstream classroom. There will also be sessions geared toward administrators who support, coach, guide, and assess within an English language acquisition program in the state of Arizona. Sessions will be presented by both national and local experts, and participants will gain information and skills that can be put to practical use.
In preparation for planning FY 2018 Title III programs, the Office of English Language Acquisition Services (OELAS) would like to inform you of some procedural and deadline changes which will impact FY 2018 federal grant funds administered by our office. Guidance was recently released by the Arizona Department of Education which addressed federal regulations for substantial approval, pre-award costs, and obligation of grant funds. OELAS followed up that guidance with an
FAQ document to clarify questions LEAs may have had. In order to assist LEAs with meeting these regulations, Title III funds, including Emergency Immigrant Education Program funds, will be made available as soon as possible after the Federal award announcement. OELAS anticipates opening FY 2018 Title III applications mid to late July. The submission deadline for FY 2018 Title III and Emergency Immigrant Education Program Original Applications has changed to October 1, 2017.
