Arizona has implemented the Statewide Instructional Technology (SIT) project to provide sustained, ongoing professional development that touches Arizona’s classrooms and to help carry out the educational technology initiatives from the Arizona Department of Education. The major focus of the SIT project is to support academic achievement by helping teachers integrate technology into the curriculum they teach. Each county has a Technology Integration Specialist (TIS) who offers a wide array of training and/or works directly with teachers in their classrooms. Each TIS works out of their counties’ Educational Service Agency (see the map to the right to see where they are located.) and covers a particular area.
To assure the Technology Integration Specialists effectively communicate with school faculty and staff using common frames of reference and language, every TIS is required to have an active Arizona teaching certificate and classroom experience. This project holds a strong belief that purchasing technology is not enough to promote significant educational change; instead teachers need training and long-term support to effectively integrate technology into their academic curriculum which will lead to increased student achievement.
