What is an ECAP?
On February 25, 2008 the Arizona State Board of Education approved Education and Career Action Plans for all Arizona students grades 9-12. An ECAP (Education and Career Action Plan) reflects a student’s current plan of coursework, career aspirations, and extended learning opportunities in order to develop the student’s individual academic and career goals.
Why is an ECAP important?
We as educators believe that integrating an Education and Career Action Plan (ECAP) process into all facets of the school experience enables students to be lifelong learners and problem-solvers, developing and applying 21st century skills to their life experiences, as students, as workers, as consumers, and as responsible citizens. With the ability to identify skills and interests and to apply that knowledge to create their own ECAP, our students will have developed needed skills to advance in a more fluid, seamless transition, meeting 21st Century technologies and work place postsecondary requirements.
As counselors and educators you have the opportunity to help a student discover their dream for the future. Supporting students in the creation of an ECAP empowers a young adult to take control of their postsecondary plans and tailor their educational experience to fit with their interests. Intentionally developing awareness about future pathways ensures that education will be more meaningful and that a student will achieve college and career readiness for postsecondary success.
What are your goals and aspirations? Do you have special talents or skills? By creating an individualized Education Career Action Plan, you can shape your own education and future. Choosing classes and extracurricular activities that fit in with your interests and future plans allows you to prepare yourself for a successful career or college experience after high school.
Your involvement in your child’s education is critical to their success in academics and their future college or career aspirations. An Education Career Action Plan (ECAP) allows you to engage with your student and their educators to create an individualized learning plan tailored to their skills, interests, and aspirations. By tracking coursework, extracurricular activities, and career interests, you will be able to watch your child’s growth and help foster meaningful motivation for success today, and in the future.
