New √ Terminology: *Alternate Assessment based on Alternate Achievement Standards (AA-AAS)-this is a term that is used to describe an Alternate Assessment. Alternate Achievement Standards are not the same as Alternate Academic Standards. *Alternate Achievement Standards-descriptors of how well a student may demonstrate proficiency via the alternate assessment. *Alternate Academic Standards-standards developed for students with significant cognitive disabilities and were aligned to Arizona’s Academic Content Standards.
*Important note* IEPs, Alternate Academic Standards, and Arizona College and Career Standards (AZCCRS):
2013-2014 is a transitional year for assessment. To be eligible for the alternate assessment, students must continue to have goals and objectives aligned to our alternate standards. However, as a state we have already fully transitioned to the implementation of the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards (AZCCRS), and teachers are utilizing them for instruction and IEP development. Incorporation of both into IEPs is necessary and can be accomplished by integrating alternate academic standards along with those from AZCCRS. Teachers can reference the NCSC instructional resources for assistance in taking the next steps in accessing the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards (AZCCRS).We will continue to use Arizona Alternate Academic Standards for Science until further notice.

Alternate Academic Standards
ELA and Mathematics: The State of Arizona has adopted the College and Career Ready Standards (AZCCRS) for ELA and Mathematics. As Arizona prepares to transition to a new alternate assessment, it is important that all teachers become knowledgeable about the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards. It is imperative that special educators are very familiar with the new format and shifts in the student standards so that they will be able to navigate through National Center and State Collaborative (NCSC) instructional supports.
Science Grade K-High School – We will continue to use Arizona Alternate Academic Standards for Science until further notice.
[The previous Alternate Academic Standards for Reading and Mathematics only are no longer applicable; they were removed and archieved. Please contact us at (602) 542-8239 or at AssessingSWDs@azed.gov if you have any questions.]
