Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)

Arizona high school students were surveyed regarding violence, suicide, alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, sexual risks, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, body image, diet and physical activity. This survey is used to assess and monitor behaviors that place individuals at increased risk for premature morbidity and mortality.

(iii). Purpose:

• To assess and monitor behaviors that place high-school students at increased risk for premature morbidity and mortality.

(iv). Statutory Reference:

• Part C – Coordination of Programs; Consolidated State and Local Plans and Applications

(v). Frequency:

• Biennial (Odd numbered years)

(vi). Survey Design:

• Multistage Random Sample (by schools and classes within school) Students in fifty percent of the sampled classes are asked to complete the YRBS. Students in the other fifty percent of the sampled classes are asked to complete the AYTS.

(vii). Unit of Analysis:

• Students in grades 9-12

(viii). Data Categories:

• Behaviors that contribute to violence and unintentional injuries
• Tobacco Use
• Alcohol and other drug use
• Sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease
• Inadequate physical activity
