Teachers of English language learners (ELLs), as well as former ELLs, will benefit from this session which will target the six shifts in English Language Arts instruction and the effect they have on English language development. English language learners require a strong foundation in oral and written language skills to access the content of Arizona’s Common Core Standards. The use of the English Language Proficiency Standards’ performance indicators will assist in the transition of ELLs into the mainstream classroom, after reclassification.

As schools work to implement the Common Core Standards in ELA and Mathematics, a hidden resource may be just down the hallway in your art, music, dance and theatre classrooms. How do arts educators address the instructional shifts embedded in the Common Core? What do they have to offer their colleagues along the hallway? Learn of examples of common core and arts intersections already in place in Arizona’s schools, and delve into the Common Core from a different, artistic point of view.

This session will introduce a Language Arts program to reinforce Language, Reading and Writing with the use of technology. The program was developed for Migrant Education students in grades 6th-12th. Oral language is the foundation for written language development. Children’s oral language competence is a strong predictor for learning to read and write. For English Language Learners, teachers need to intentionally provide ample opportunities for structured conversations. Research strongly suggests that instruction should explicitly address the link between oral and written language which impacts the child’s later ability to read and comprehend.

This is a presentation on the changes to the Federal accountability system (i.e., how AMOs targets, Priority, Focus, Reward determinations were calculated, and the impact on AMAO 3). The SGTs were mentioned in the ADE’s ESEA flexibility request to possibly be used as the basis for AMOs in the future.

The AZ Standards Insight Tool is a web-based application that “unpacks” the Arizona’s Common Core Standards, allowing districts to quickly and easily align curricula. This web-based system provides a robust database, containing five unpacked fields and six customizable fields. The AZ Curriculum Companion Tool is designed by national content experts and Wisconsin educators. The AZ Curriculum Companion provides a scope and sequence to teach all core standards in Math and ELA. This online comprehensive tool provides easy navigation through teaching modules and provides customization for local resources.

The results from the 2011 NAEP National Indian Education Study were just released July 2012. The next NIES will not be administered until 2015. Data from the 2011 study will be shared with participants. Participants in district and school teams will then discuss how the math, reading, and qualitative data might inform their work, given their context. Participants will discuss possible initiatives and strategies to assist their students in the content areas. Participants will walk away with an action plan designed to assist them in implementing one strategy targeted to improving education for their Native American students.

Internationally, the Japanese education system has ranked among the best in the world for the past 50 years. In international tests of math sponsored by the IEA held in 1964 and 1980, Japan ranked number one. In the Test of International Math and Science Study held since 1995, Japan has consistently ranked in the top five nations. This presentation will address how the Japanese education system has effectively combated literacy problems and at the same time achieved high academic performance.
