Summer Reading Program
To prepare Arizona’s students for college and career opportunities, and to promote the fun and joy of reading, the Arizona Department of Education believes in and encourages reading year round. Arizona READS is an exciting new summer reading program to ensure that school summer vacation does not also mean a vacation from reading. This free online service to Arizona families will provide a way for parents and students to quickly and easily search books that match reading levels and interests. Reading something interesting and at the correct level is very important for the joy, fun, and motivation of reading. The online tool will locate the local library carrying each selected title. Families can use the online tool to find appropriate books and to build personal reading lists for the summer with a Lexile measure, or by searching using the student’s lexile or grade level. A Lexile measure matches a reader with books that will provide the right level of challenge to support reading growth. For students who have taken the AIMS Reading assessment the conversion from AIMS reading to lexile score can be found HERE.
Arizona READS also encourages librarians to share the free online tool with Arizona families. Librarians have long promoted summer reading and can help families use the online tool to find appropriate books that children will enjoy reading over the summer.
The Arizona READS summer reading program complements other state reading efforts like the Governor’s Summer Reading Initiative and local library programs, by locating books that students might be interested in reading and directing families to local libraries that carry the selected books
