Asthma:

- Implement the CDC “School Health Index (SHI): A Self-Assessment and Planning Guide” to assist elementary, middle and high schools) in assessing and improving their nutrition, physical activity, and chronic disease programs and policies in the context of a coordinated school health program
- Implement the “Arizona Healthy School Environment Model Policy”
- Implement adapted version of the CDC “School Health Index (SHI): A Self-Assessment and Planning Guide” to assist preschool, daycare and childcare personnel in assessing and improving their nutrition (including breastfeeding), physical activity, diabetes, and asthma practices and protocols
- Beneficial Use of Tobacco Taxes Program (BUTT)
- Develop school-based youth club linked with community group to establish Air Quality Index Monitoring program
- Implement Open Airway curriculum or similar school-based curricula to train school-based personnel
- Conduct school-based activities designed to increase physical activity
Diabetes:
- Implement the CDC School Health Index (SHI: A Self-Assessment and Planning Guide) to assist elementary, middle and high schools) in assessing and improving their nutrition, physical activity, and chronic disease programs and policies in the context of a coordinated school health program
- Implement adapted version of the CDC “School Health Index (SHI): A Self-Assessment and Planning Guide” to assist Headstart personnel in assessing and improving their nutrition (including breastfeeding), physical activity, diabetes, and asthma practices and protocols
- Implement Diabetes education and awareness programs in grades 6-12
- Design and conduct high school physical education program targeting students at risk for, or living with diabetes
- Design training for food school service staff on healthy food preparation and cooking that emphasizes low cost, nutrient dense, culturally appropriate foods, resulting in a training video
(This is a proposed pilot project with the Arizona Culinary Institute (ACI) to test in Cochise County in year 2 for replication in the other SABI counties in subsequent years)
- Develop and facilitate school health committees
- Provide in service for teachers on curriculum programs and available resources for on-going community nutrition and physical activities
- Implement school walking programs, (such as walking school bus), create safe walking routes to school and establish intramural recreation programs
- Secure resources in support of school-based wellness center
- Promoting Lifetime Activity for Youth (PLAY) Program (promotes physical activity in elementary schools)
- “5-a-Day” Program (promotes eating fruits and vegetables to 3rd graders)
