Based on research, the Common Core Standards provide text complexity grade bands and associated Lexile bands that are intended to put students on a college- and career-ready trajectory. These grade and Lexile bands are the basis for determining at what text complexity level students should be reading—and at which grades—to make sure they are ultimately prepared for the reading demands of college and careers. Turnonccmath.com is a new learning trajectory resource to support interpretation of the Common Core State Standards for mathematics. The GISMO mathematics education research team, at NC State University’s Friday Institute, has developed 18 Learning Trajectories with descriptors that unpack all of the K-8 CCSS-M Standards, with mapping to the CCSS-M via a hexagon map of the standards.

The Quantile Framework is a scale that describes a student’s mathematical achievement and the difficulty of specific mathematical skills and concepts. It works a lot like a ruler or thermometer, except rather than measuring length or temperature, the Quantile Framework measures readiness in mathematics learning.

Effective implementation of the CCSS is a tall order for states, districts, and schools. Successful states and districts approach the challenge of implementing education reforms, such as the Common Core standards, systemically rather than piecemeal. WestEd works with all levels of the education system to guide Common Core implementation, building on existing strengths and overcoming barriers. WestEd Common Core Implementation web site
Making a list is usually straightforward and requires little thought. But when it comes to ordering and prioritizing items in that list, higher-level skills of analysis and evaluation are put to use. The Visual Ranking Tool brings focus to the thinking behind making ordered lists. Students identify and refine criteria as they assign order or ranking to a list. Items in the list may be represented by images. Students must explain their reasoning and can compare their work with each other in a visual diagram. This tool supports activities where students need to organize ideas, debate differences, and reach consensus. The tool and related resources are available for free, from any computer that is connected to the Internet. Students may work on their lists at home or at school, and can even compare their ideas with students located in distant classrooms.

Analyzing cause-and-effect relationships is important to understanding complex systems. With the Seeing Reason Tool students create visual maps of the factors and relationships in a cause-and-effect investigation. These maps make thinking visible and promote collaboration as students work together to refine their understanding. The tool and related resources are available for free, from any computer that is connected to the Internet. Students may work on their lists at home or at school, and can even compare their ideas with students located in distant classrooms.
Intel® Seeing Reason Tool Website
Teach students how to use a visual framework to construct a well-reasoned argument and prove their case with credible evidence. The tool provides a visual framework to make claims, identify evidence, evaluate the quality of that evidence, explain how the evidence supports or weakens claims, and reach conclusions based on the evidence. This thinking tool supports activities where students debate differences, make and defend decisions, and analyze conflicting information. The tool and related resources are available for free, from any computer that is connected to the Internet. Students may work on their claims and evidence at home or at school, and can be paired with another team to review their ideas.
