Join us for Part One of Two of the Arizona History Series! Attendance on both days is not mandatory so come both or either day.
Arizona History Session #1: The Grand Canyon State (Grades 3-12)
In this morning session of the Arizona History Series, we will cover the geography, economics, and government of the state, giving educators a historical and contemporary run-down of the 48th state. Educators will not only learn the history, but they will also dive into resources (including lessons from the Arizona Geographic Alliance) and strategies to incorporate this learning into their classrooms. Whether you are an Arizona native or a new transplant, this session will expand your knowledge and introduce new ideas about the Grand Canyon State. Held in the Historic Senate Chamber at the State Capitol, this place-based learning opportunity will give educators that second layer of Arizona’s history!
Arizona History Session #2: Stories of Displaced Peoples (Grades 3-12)
This afternoon session of the Arizona History Series Part One will focus on the diverse and sometimes hard history presented in the 2018 History and Social Science Standards including the Federal Indian Boarding Schools, Japanese incarceration, and the federal allocation of indigenous land. Using primary sources, including oral histories, we will discuss and analyze the groups of displaced peoples and how these groups shaped the state of Arizona. This session will present evidence-based resources and lessons to help bring these topics into the classroom.
Information on lunch to come soon!
