AP, IB and Cambridge International Examinations Testing Updates for Schools and Students Impacted by Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Update Summary from the College Board for Spring 2020 AP Exams

The College Board has announced that all in-person AP tests have been canceled for this year due to safety concerns related to the coronavirus (COVID-19).

In their place, the College Board will make AP tests available to be taken from home via a 45-minute online exam. There will be 2 different testing dates for each AP subject area test. Also, any student already registered for an exam can choose to cancel at no charge.

Please see the information below from the College Board regarding this opportunity:

• For the 2019–20 exam administration only, students can take a 45-minute online free-response exam at home. Educator-led development committees are currently selecting the exam questions that will be administered.
• AP curricula are locally developed and we defer to local decisions on how best to help students complete coursework. To be fair to all students, some of whom have lost more instructional time than others, the exam will only include topics and skills most AP teachers and students have already covered in class by early March.
• Colleges support this solution and are committed to ensuring that AP students receive the credit they have worked this year to earn. For decades, colleges have accepted a shortened AP Exam for college credit when groups of students have experienced emergencies.
• Students will be able to take these streamlined exams on any device they have access to—computer, tablet, or smartphone. Taking a photo of handwritten work will also be an option.
• We recognize that the digital divide could prevent some low-income and rural students from participating. Working with partners, we will invest so that these students have the tools and connectivity they need to review AP content online and take the exam. Additionally, the College Board has created an site with free remote learning resources for AP students. This site included information regarding free live online AP review courses delivered by AP teachers that are scheduled to begin on March 25^th.

May 2020 IB exams scheduled for Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme have been canceled due to safety concerns related to the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Please see the information below from IB:

The IB will be taking the following actions for the 2020 May Examination session:

• The May 2020 examinations as scheduled between 30 April and 22 May for Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme candidates will no longer be held.
• Depending on what they registered for, the student will be awarded a Diploma or a Course Certificate which reflects their standard of work. This is based on student's coursework and the established assessment expertise, rigor and quality control already built into the programmes.

Per the IB, more details and FAQs regarding next steps will be sent to IB schools by March 27^th.

Additionally, information regarding the impact on Middle Years Programme (MYP) eAssessment examinations scheduled for May 11-22 will be provided the week of March 30^th.

Cambridge International has moved to cancel international examinations worldwide due to safety concerns related to the coronavirus (COVID-19). Exams impacted include Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge AS and A Level.

Please see the information below from Cambridge International:

We recognise that students have been working very hard towards these exams. We will be working with schools to assess students’ achievements using the best available evidence. Students will receive a grade and a certificate from Cambridge International, given the knowledge and skills they have acquired in their programmes of study. This will ensure students do not face disadvantage as a result of these extraordinary circumstances.

We will provide guidance to schools on how students will receive those grades. We are talking to universities worldwide, and they are factoring these unprecedented circumstances into admissions decisions, so students can continue with their education journeys as soon as possible.

We are also aware of the impact the situation may have on student motivation and learning. Many of our schools are working hard to deliver teaching online to support their students’ learning.
