Day 1 will take a look at differentiated instruction for ABE math. It is not about having a bag of tricks to try; it is a way of thinking about teaching and learning. Join us as we look into teaching mathematics in a way where students feel valued and supported in maximizing their full academic/social and emotional potential. We will look at the mathematical standards, practices, curriculum, lessons, instruction, and assessments. You will get a chance to explore students success through meaningful and powerful ideas.
Day 2 will explore how trauma affects adult learners. Too often, in and Adult Education classroom, algebra is taught by introducing variables, formulas, and vocabulary that doesn't make any sense to the students. This can intimidate, and sometimes terrify, the students. Instead we can approach each representation with the question, "What is the story that is happening here?". Students can build a solid conceptual understanding of what these things represent and how they work together. Using real-life experiences that adults are familiar with can empower our students, allowing them to not only master algebra but feel confident in their ability as they do.
ESL Pro 2:
In this two day session, participants will explore ways to integrate digital literacy into their language instruction. This very hands-on training will allow participants to explore new technology as well as learn new strategies that integrate digital literacy and language learning instruction into their classroom.
