Arizona Young Artists' Competition

The Arizona Young Artists’ Competition offers aspiring young artists with an opportunity to compete in the disciplines of Acting, Dance and Musical Theatre Voice (age 15-19) and Classical Voice (age 16-20).

Showcases the diverse and emerging talent of young Arizona artists, introduce them to the audition process, and provides them with an opportunity to interact with highly-regarded arts professionals. The winner in each category will receive a $1,500 scholarship to help further their education in the arts. The audience also has a chance to participate and vote for their favorite performer in the People’s Choice Awards.

We are thrilled to have you join the legacy of young artists seeking enriching educational opportunities. Through the Arizona Young Artists’ competition, our community’s burgeoning creatives are given the opportunity to compete in the disciplines of Dance, Classical Voice, Musical Theatre Voice and Acting. This competition allows for young Arizona artists to experience the audition process and garner productive feedback and pertinent experience through adjudication by highly regarded arts professionals.

Once initial auditions are complete, four finalists will be chosen from each discipline. These artists will be given the chance to wow our panel of esteemed judges once more and vie for the opportunity to win a $1500 first prize scholarship awarded to the winner of each discipline. The audience will also be able to vote on their favorite performer to win the People’s Choice Award. People’s Choice Award recipients will be awarded $100.

Registration:
• Early registration for each discipline on or before Sunday, February 6, 2022 is $25 and $35 thereafter through Sunday, February 13, 2022.
• Registration is online only. Please register online below and choose your audition time when you register.
• All applicants are asked to bring a headshot to their audition, a tightly cropped photo of the face, from the shoulders up. This does not have to be a formal headshot but we ask that you bring a clear, printed-out, photo to aid our adjudicators in facial recognition.

MANDATORY AVAILABILTY:
• Dress Rehearsal for ALL FINALISTS at 1:00PM on Saturday, February 26, 2022
• Evening Awards Show for ALL FINALISTS on Saturday, February 26, at 7:00PM.
• Tech rehearsal for DANCERS ONLY on Friday, February 25, at 4:00PM
If you cannot attend ALL of the applicable events listed above, we unfortunately will not be able to accept your application.

Requirements for each discipline:

Actor Auditions:
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 21
Actors ages 15-19, will perform two contrasting monologues, not to exceed 4 minutes in total. Classical pieces are welcomed, but are not required. This is their chance to demonstrate and receive feedback on; vocal strength, appropriate physicality, emotional range, interpretation and timing.

Vocalist Auditions:
CLASSICAL: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 22
MUSICAL THEATRE: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23
There are two vocal categories, Classical and Musical Theatre. The Classical division will be for students aged 16 – 20 and will require two pieces, totaling no more than 6 minutes; one of the pieces must be in a foreign language. The Musical Theatre division is for students aged 15 – 19 and requires two pieces totaling not more than 6 minutes; 1 pre 1968 and 1 post 1968.
In addition to being the Vocal Coordinator, Mark Fearey will continue to be the pianist for the preliminary round as well as the finals. His contact information is listed in the vocalist registration link.

Dancer Auditions:
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24
Dancers ages 15-19, will perform a 4-minute piece, which they may choose to choreograph themselves or have choreographed by someone else. Participating gives them the opportunity to experience audition preparation, and to receive feedback on performer energy, musical integrity and technique. All dance styles are accepted.

All auditions and performances will take place at the Herberger Theater Center, 222 E Monroe St., Phoenix, AZ 85004
