Educators: Welcometo Social Emotional Learning

SEL in the Classroom

Social-emotional competencies, like math and science, are strengthened when they are integrated into all settings where students learn and grow. For students, the classroom is at the center of their educational journey. It's where they'll grow new friendships, learn to read and develop the skills that will prepare them for life and career outside of the classroom.

Evidence-based SEL programs are most effective when integrated into all settings that students learn and grow. As such, it is recommended to use resources on this page in conjunction with a school-wide approach to SEL.

Please refer to the curriculum established by your local education agencies. As a reminder, any reference to a specific product, process, or service does not constitute or imply an endorsement by the Arizona Department of Education of the product, process, or service, or its producer or provider.  Any suggested lessons or classroom materials do not supersede the curriculum and materials decided upon by local education agencies.

This page contains resources for educators who lead the work of academic, social, and emotional growth in the classroom.

Arizona’s SEL Competencies and Framework

The Arizona Social Emotional Learning Competencies use CASEL's five core competencies which describe what social and emotional learning looks like in practice. By using the integrated framework, the five core competencies can be taught in many ways across many settings.

Unlike standards that are established criteria that students should know and be able to do, competencies describe how students apply and transfer their learning to new contexts and situations.

Visit our SEL Competencies page to learn more about the five core competencies and integrated framework.

Visit our SEL Professional Development page to learn about upcoming training opportunities for educators. Thanks to federal COVID-19 recovery funding, many of these training events are free to educators.

Resources

For more resources, including how to integrate the five core competencies into the Arizona standards, visit the Arizona SEL Competencies page.

From the Exceptional Student Services Team, this page includes information on professional learning and resources regarding Multi-Tier Behavioral Supports (MTBS), SEL, PBIS, and more. Additionally, it includes information and resources on our team’s work with Dr. Bruce Perry and the Neurosequential Model.

From the School Safety and Social Wellness team, this page is meant to serve as a resource for educators and learners to build their mental health inside and outside the classroom. It includes resources from Project AWARE, a Social Emotional and Mental Health Resource Guide, and hotlines that provide help now.

Supporting Educator Mental Health and Wellbeing

During the summer of 2021, ADE and the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) developed an educator peer support program to pair educators with trained peer coaches to provide one-on-one, confidential support and connect educators in need with resources.

This program is free and confidential. It has already helped Arizona educators connect with mental health resources and professionals.
