Call for Papers

Arizona’s Fifteenth Annual Transition Conference, Connecting for Success: Shared Expectations, Responsibilities, and Outcomes, invites the submission of proposals for breakout sessions. This year’s conference is structured around three topical strands: 1) Connecting with Youth; 2) Connecting with Families; and 3) Connecting with Agency and Community Partners. This collaborative, cross-stakeholder event includes youth and young adults with disabilities, family members and caregivers, state agency staff, educators, service providers, and community members who share a commitment to the successful transition of students to adult life.

Proposal submissions are invited that address one of the three strands, include practical and replicable activities or strategies, and focus on strengths as they relate to:

• Best practices/evidence-based practices;

• Implementation strategies;

• Outcomes and/or products; and

• Tools to share that support replication.

Proposals will be chosen to create a balance of topics that will appeal to a variety of audiences.

Call for Cover Artwork

Arizona’s Fifteenth Annual Transition Conference Planning Committee is seeking artwork designed by students with IEPs for this year’s conference brochure cover. Any student currently enrolled in an Arizona public education agency (PEA) or approved private school who is identified with a disability and is between the ages of 14 and 22 is eligible to submit an entry.  The entry submission deadline is Friday, March 6, 2015.

The first-place winning entry will be used on the brochure cover. Other winning entries will be used throughout the conference brochure, and all student entries will be acknowledged by the Arizona Department of Education/Exceptional Student Services. The theme, Connecting for Success: Shared Expectations, Responsibilities, and Outcomes, reflects the importance of making connections with the people, agencies, and resources that support engagement, independence, and successful post-school outcomes for students with disabilities. The cover artist winner and his or her family will be offered scholarships to attend the conference.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to designing flexible curriculum, instruction, and materials that are accessible to all students. The training will introduce the principles of UDL and present information on a framework to reduce barriers and maximize learning opportunities for all students.

Presenter Jeff McCormick, MS, is the Program Director for the Universal Design for Learning Center at OCALI in Columbus, Ohio.  Jeff presents at schools, universities, and state and national conferences on topics ranging from universal design for learning, technology integration, and educational project deployment at state levels. He has created on-line training modules for UDL that will be available throughout the year to institute participants at no additional cost.UDL March

Throughout the two-day workshop participants will have the opportunity to engage in whole group, small group, and paired collaborative discussions within grade level and content areas to refine collaborative practices between general education and special education and develop and write AZCCRS standards-based Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.

Training Outcomes

During this two-day workshop, participants will:

  • Expand understanding of the AZCCRS for ELA/Literacy and Mathematics in order to develop standards-aligned IEP goals aligned to the student’s AZCCRS present levels of academic achievement and functional performance (PLAAFP)
  • Integrate research of how children learn to order to identify areas of need in the development of IEP goals
  • Obtain a solid understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to integrate learning into daily practice
  • Develop and write standards-aligned IEP goals related to students’ needs as described in the PLAAFP
  • Explore and use readily available resources, tools, and evidenced-based strategies to support students with disabilities to access the AZCCRS in ELA/Literacy and Mathematics

De-escalate: Stop the Power Struggle

In this full-day session, participants will learn prevention and de-escalation techniques, as well as the importance of understanding their own emotional states in avoiding power struggles. Participants will have the opportunity to connect and apply these techniques through case studies, role play activities, and real-life discussions and examples and will learn how to make connections to their own emotional reactions and how these reactions relate to their students’ responses. This session is for any school staff members who want to be proficient at de-escalating and avoiding power struggles with students.

“Assistive Technology Assessment”
Are you confused about your responsibility to provide assistive technology devices and services? Are you frustrated with delays in obtaining AT assessments from sources outside of your district or with the cost of those assessments? Are you looking for an efficient, effective way to determine a student’s need for assistive technology? Then this workshop is for you! This workshop will present a team-based model for completing assistive technology considerations and assessment. It begins with a brief overview of the laws related to the provision of assistive technology in the schools. A simple, easy-to follow system of AT considerations of IEP teams will be demonstrated. Then an assistive technology assessment process will be explained. This assessment process includes three stages: information gathering, decision making, and trial implementation. Specific, easy-to-follow forms will be provided. There will be opportunities for guided practice and feedback throughout the day.

Regional Secondary Transition Trainings Available for 2014-2015

The Arizona Department of Education/Exceptional Student Services Secondary Transition unit is excited to bring regional secondary transition trainings to Arizona beginning in the fall of the 2014–2015 school year.

Secondary transition requirements for students 16 years old and older (or younger if appropriate) include ten specific IEP components that facilitate successful transition from high school to postsecondary life in the areas of education/training, career, and independent living.

These regional trainings will be presented in two parts:

  • Part 1 will be a full-day training for those who are new to secondary transition and will cover the following topics: Introduction to Indicator 13: Secondary Transition Requirements and Transition Plans and ECAPS.
  • Part 2 will be a half-day training for those who are familiar with secondary transition requirements and who want to participate in the Writing a Secondary IEP for Transition Using Best Practices workshop.

Participants attending Part 1 and Part 2 will learn both compliance requirements and the best practices to meet those requirements.

NOTE: If you want to attend both parts, you must register for each one separately.
