Public Notice Regarding Application for Federal Funds under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA)

The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) is applying for federal funding under IDEA ‘04 for the period of July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016.  The eligibility document serves as the basis for the operation and administration of activities to carry out the requirements of Part B of the IDEA.  In accordance with 34 C.F.R. §§ 300.165 and 441 (b)(7), the federal regulations that implement the General Education Provisions Act (GEPA) ((20 U.S.C. §1232d(b)(7)(B)), this application is posted for public participation and comment.

The Application document sets forth policies and procedures that Arizona will undertake:

  • to ensure that all eligible children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education that includes special education and related services to meet their unique needs;
  • to ensure that the rights of children with disabilities and their parents are protected;
  • to assist public education agencies in providing for the education of all children with disabilities; and
  • to assess and ensure the effectiveness of efforts to educate those children.

The Part B State Application and Interactive Spreadsheet are available to parents, educators, and members of the general public for review and comment at the Arizona Department of Education, Exceptional Student Services, 3300 N. TBI 303 — Contemporary Issues after Brain Injury Executive Functioning and Transition for Success in Adulthood

This 2-part workshop will include two 3-hour presentations from agency professionals who will focus on (1) Assessing Executive Functioning and Implications for College and Career Readiness and (2) Secondary Transition: From School to Adult Services in Vocational Rehabilitation, Adult Programs, and Post-Secondary Education. The format for the sessions will be short-format lecture with open discussion, ongoing question and answer sessions throughout, and include interactive opportunities to review relevant assessments and resources. All materials for this training will be provided.

You must have taken TBI 101 prior to this workshop.

SELECT Summer 2015 Courses

SELECT (Special Education Learning Experiences for Competency in Teaching) is a federally funded program sponsored by the Arizona Department of Education and offered by the Institute for Human Development at Northern Arizona University. SELECT courses are entirely online and are recommended for special and general education teachers, administrators, related service personnel, and para-educators. Certified school personnel can take SELECT classes for renewal hours. SELECT classes can be taken for university credit by those teachers or administrators who are required by their school districts to have official transcripts and for those who may need to transfer hours to another district or out of state. The classes also can be taken for professional growth contact hours for free.

Writing a Secondary IEP for Transition Using Best Practices Workshop

This interactive workshop assists participants in applying information from previous secondary transition training(s) conducted by our ADE/ESS transition specialists to specific students’ needs. The expectation is that participants attending this training will come with a foundation of Indicator 13 knowledge. After a quick review of Indicator 13 components (with specific best practices examples), specialists will assist participants in reviewing their IEPs to answer four key questions designed to improve transition plans.

Understanding the PSO Survey: Data Collection, Analysis, and Use

This interactive and practical training is designed for those who oversee or administer the Post School Outcomes (PSO) Survey. The PSO Survey, conducted one year after students exit high school, is required to be completed by districts and charter schools who serve students with disabilities ages 16 and over each year between June 1st and September 30th. Upon completion of the training participants will understand requirements for the PSO Survey and how to incorporate suggested tips and techniques to insure that data collection is meaningful and results obtained are useful.

De-escalate: Stop the Power Struggle

In this full-day session, participants will learn prevention and de-escalation techniques, as well as the importance of understanding their own emotional states in avoiding power struggles. Participants will have the opportunity to connect and apply these techniques through case studies, role play activities, and real-life discussions and examples and will learn how to make connections to their own emotional reactions and how these reactions relate to their students’ responses. This session is for any school staff members who want to be proficient at de-escalating and avoiding power struggles with students.
