The Arizona Department of Education/Exceptional Student Services, in collaboration with Raising Special Kids, is pleased to announce an opportunity to hear Jonathan Mooney, a dynamic international speaker, who will share his experience of “falling outside of the norm.” He will discuss the need to have a strengths-based perspective on how people learn – students, family members, general and special educators, and community members will be moved by his message!

Mr. Mooney is a writer and learning activist with dyslexia who did not learn to read until he was 12 years old. He is a graduate of Brown University and holds an honors degree in English Literature. He is cofounder of Project Eye-To-Eye, a widely duplicated mentoring program for students with disabilities. Mr. Mooney was also a winner of the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship for public service and was selected as a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarships.

Regional Secondary Transition Trainings Available for 2014-2015

The Arizona Department of Education/Exceptional Student Services Secondary Transition unit is excited to bring regional secondary transition trainings to Arizona beginning in the fall of the 2014–2015 school year.

Secondary transition requirements for students 16 years old and older (or younger if appropriate) include ten specific IEP components that facilitate successful transition from high school to postsecondary life in the areas of education/training, career, and independent living.

These regional trainings will be presented in two parts:

  • Part 1 will be a full-day training for those who are new to secondary transition and will cover the following topics: Introduction to Indicator 13: Secondary Transition Requirements and Transition Plans and ECAPS.
  • Part 2 will be a half-day training for those who are familiar with secondary transition requirements and who want to participate in the Writing a Secondary IEP for Transition Using Best Practices workshop.

Participants attending Part 1 and Part 2 will learn both compliance requirements and the best practices to meet those requirements.

NOTE: If you want to attend both parts, you must register for each one separately.

Why is it important?

Integrated employment is the first priority of Employment First. The preferred outcome of the initiative is for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities that are job-ready and seeking to join the workforce obtain employment with an employer at or above minimum wage or generate earnings through self-employment. Maximum self-sufficiency through full integration into the community workforce is the desired end result of these efforts.

What do we want?

The Community Forums is the first in a series of activities planned to gather information from stakeholders, advocates, individuals with disabilities and their family members, about your needs for employment services. We want to hear from you. Your input will assist in the development of a comprehensive Employment First Strategic Plan which will be designed to empower our state to deliver quality, innovative employment supports focused on self-determination and inclusion.

Who should attend?

We need educators, people with disabilities and their families, self-advocates, transition specialists, service providers, business and community leaders, and all interested parties to discuss employment for people with disabilities.

How can you help?

Make a difference in your community by helping us improve employment outcomes. Attend one of our forums to provide your input and help us make employment the first option for all people with disabilities.
