Leading the Way

Leading the Way to College and Career Readiness for Native American Students

Save the Date September 15-16, 2014

The Office of Indian Education at the Arizona Department of Education in partnership with the West Comprehensive Center at WestEd is pleased to announce the first Arizona Native American conference focusing on innovative and promising approaches to implementing Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards (AZCCRS).

The purpose of the conference is to bring together district and school practitioners, national experts, researchers, and tribal education leaders to examine the implementation of college and career ready standards with a focus on rigor, relevancy and real-world applications in the context of Native American culture and community. Educators who work with Native American students regularly draw on their rich histories, knowledge, languages and traditions as natural ways to align local context with schooling practices, expanding conventional ideas of what teaching and learning look like. The conference will highlight innovative approaches and promising instructional practices in districts and schools that serve large populations of Native American students.

Participants will:

  1. Identify innovative and promising instructional practices in literacy, mathematics, STEM and family engagement; districts and schools that serve large populations of Native American students will be highlighted;
  2. Explore strategies to disseminate and replicate innovative practices and outcomes Pre-K thru 12;
  3. Establish connections among reform initiatives and partners to support the academic success of Native American students.
  4. Examine current and emergent research on rigor and relevancy and its implications for Native American students.
