(This schedule illustrates an integrated curriculum and provides time for a snack and “specials” such as Art, PE and Music)
15-20 min – OPENING ACTIVITIES – Children will:
- participate in opening routines (attendance, calendar, etc.),
- hear about new or special activities planned for the day
20-40 min – GROUP TIME (whole and small group instruction) – Children will:
- learn about new concepts in the content areas of language and literacy, math, science and social studies
- participate in language and print rich activities guided by the teacher
- listen to presentations from special visitors such as community workers
- participate in group singing, finger plays, poetry, and other music and movement activities
45-60 min – WORK TIME IN LEARNING CENTERS –Children will:
- extend their learning experiences by engaging in activities in the various work centers such as the reading/writing, dramatic play, block, art, science, music, & math areas
- cooperate with a classmate or in a small group
- work one on one with a teacher
- practice and generalize skills such as dictation, writing, counting and problem solving through relevant and meaningful activities
5-10 min – CLEAN UP / PREPARE FOR SNACK
10-15 min – SNACK TIME – Children will:
- experience new foods and learn about nutrition
- socialize with friends
- practice math skills by helping to count plates and cups and other needed items.
- learn self-help skills
20-30 min – OUTDOOR ACTIVITY TIME – Children will:
- use their whole bodies in active play to develop small and large muscle groups
- engage in age-appropriate games
- work cooperatively with others
- use playground equipment
30-45 min – SHARED READING EXPERIENCE – Children will:
- read books, song charts and/or picture stories together
- participate in themed activities which extend the current lesson
- learn about print concepts through teacher guided reading and writing activities
20-30 min – LUNCH
15-20 min – QUIET TIME – Children will:
- listen to quiet music
- listen to stories and look at books
- use quiet materials individually
40-50 min – SPECIAL ACTIVITIES (such as Art, Music, PE, etc) – Children will:
- engage in learning outside the classroom environment
- participate in extended learning opportunities
- learn about the fine arts
- learn about health and nutrition
15-20 min – JOURNAL WRITING – Children will:
- write about self-chosen or prompted topics using pictures and/or words
- dictate stories
- express their thoughts and ideas in pictures and/or words

- review concepts learned during the day
- verbalize in a group setting what they have done/learned
- begin to appreciate others’ points of view
Note: All times shown are approximate and will depend on your child’s school day. However, the relative proportion of time allotted to different types of activity should not vary greatly. For example, the proportion of time devoted to work time should exceed the amount of group time regardless of the specifics of your child’s schedule.
