Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE)
SAE activities directly tie to career planning, are student managed, and take place in a workplace environment or simulated environment. SAEs may occur on or off school campus, through a virtual program, in a greenhouse, at a farm, on a ranch, etc. SAEs may align with other WBL models and delivery systems, but are specific to agricultural related careers, materials, and processes.

The National Council for Agricultural Education identifies seven types of SAE models:
- Foundational: should be offered in a student’s first semester and it is a great option for students who only take one course.
- Immersion: take students into authentic work environments to receive coaching and feedback on employability skills. Immersion SAEs should include a list of employability skills relevant to CTE Program Standards that will be developed during the experience.
- Placement/Internship: the student is placed into an employment setting that is either paid or unpaid. Training agreements and training plans must be in place to outline student and employer expectations and CTE Program Standard alignment.
- Ownership/Entrepreneurship: student operates a business that provides agricultural goods or services and is aligned with CTE Program Standards.
- Research: Experimental, Analysis, or Invention: students evaluate materials, processes, and/or information to develop new materials and processes or validate current research relevant to CTE Program Standards.
- School-Based Enterprise: student-led business enterprises operated on campus that provide goods or services specific to agriculture and aligned with CTE Program Standards.
- Service-Learning: students identify a community need and complete structured activities to develop and complete the project. Service-Learning SAEs must provide benefit to an organization, group, or individuals other than the FFA chapter and must be aligned with CTE Program Standards.
