Assessment Overview

The Assessment Section is responsible for statewide assessment of students enrolled in Arizona public schools. The section works closely with educators in the development and administration of our assessments. All Arizona public schools, including districts schools and charter schools, are required to properly administer state and federally mandated assessments.

New State Achievement Assessment
The State Board of Education’s final selection and adoption of a new statewide English language arts and mathematics achievement assessment is expected to occur in early October. This new statewide achievement assessment will be aligned to the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards and will be administered beginning in spring of 2015. Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS)
AIMS Science is a Standards Based Assessment that measures student proficiency of the Arizona Academic Content Standard in Science. It meets federal requirements for student assessment. It is administered in the spring to students in Grades 4, 8, and high school.

AIMS HS is a Standards Based Assessment in the content areas of Writing, Reading, and Mathematics. Students graduating from high school on or before December 31, 2016 must pass all three content areas of AIMS HS. AIMS HS will be administered every October and February through 2016. The National Center and State Collaborative (NCSC) is a project led by five centers and 24 states (13 core states and 11 Tier II states) to build an alternate assessment based on alternate achievement standards (AA-AAS) for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. The goal of the NCSC project is to ensure that students with the most significant cognitive disabilities achieve increasingly higher academic outcomes and leave high school ready for post-secondary options.

Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards Alternate (AIMS A) is a Standards Based Assessment that measures what students know and are able to do in the content area of Science as presented in the Arizona Alternate Academic Standards. Students will receive test reports with specific information detailing their progress toward meeting the standards. Arizona’s English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) is a Standards Based Assessment that measures a student’s English language proficiency based on the Arizona English Language Proficiency Standards. AZELLA meets both state and federal requirements in assessing the language proficiency of students identified as second language learners and determines placement for appropriate instruction.

National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is a national assessment of academic content outlined in the NAEP Academic Frameworks. The assessments are given to a sample of students in in Grades 4, 8, and 12. There are no individual student, school or district scores.

Arizona participates as part of the U.S. sample results in the following international assessments:

  • PISA: Program of International Students Assessment assessing a sample of 15 year old students every 3 years in the content areas of mathematics, science, and reading literacy.
  • PIRLS: Progress in International Reading Literacy Study assessing a sample of Grade 4 students every 5 years for reading achievement.
  • TIMSS – Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study assessing grade 4, 8, and 12 students every 4 years in the content areas of math and science.
